Power question?

I've read in many places that it takes twice the power to gain 3dB. But, I've also read that it takes 10 times the power to gain the said 3dB. Which one is true?

it's twice the power to gain 3db, 10 times to gain 10 db

Re: Power question?

In general, +3db = 2X input power to the same speaker. +10db = twice as loud to our ears, and that requires 10X the power.

Ok. I thought that the 3dB gain was noticable to our ears as twice as loud though?

No, it takes +10db to be twice as loud. +1db is the threshold of detectability by most people, +3db is usually called "noticeably louder." In general, +3db is what it takes to make any real difference to the average person... unless you're competing of course then +.1db can be the difference between a trophy and a wannabe line pounder.

cuddos to +.1dB I've heard of people ripping out concrete, 7 layers of MDF baffle, 2x4's, sound deadener, duct tape over vents... for .1dB!

Re: Power question?

So 110dB is twice as loud as 100dB?

Is 114dB to 116dB at 20Hz to 100Hz fairly flat good enough for a subwoofer?

Re: Power question?

110db SPL is perceived as twice as loud as 100db, yes. A +/- 2db variation is SPL is generally not significant, unless you are competing in car audio.
