If you don't have a BFD for your sub, get one fast!
If you don't have REW, get it now!

How about Elemental Designs subwoofers??

Any of the A2, A3, A5, A7 series subwoofers.

They are primarily a car audio subwoofer company but have ventured into HT lately. They seem to have good quality components and the enclosures are built rigidly. They seem to be a bargain and have free shipping on the bigger units. They might even offer to lend one to test!
The dual 12" and dual 15" units look really interesting!! I hope Illka can find an arrangement with EDesign to have at least one of those tested

I have sent them several e-mails but I haven't got any replies. I guess they are not interested...

Maybe it would help if some people would e-mail them that they would like to see EDesign's subwoofers being tested?

Ilkka,
IMHO they have a less than desirable email/tech support system. I've always had difficulties getting replies through emails. In my experience they seem to answer the phone and it all most never fails. A girl named Le will answer and than ask to speak to Ben.

I just got a reply from EDesign.

"Currently we do not have enough inventory to offer you one for testing."

So no ED subs for this round of testing.

You would think that a company just getting their feet wet in the HT arena would want the publicity of competant independant testing, alongside many subs who have already proven themselves. Then again, there are those who avoid testing for fear of embassassment next to "giants" ...

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

This is exactly what I would like to see. A Sub shootout. No particular order. SVS PB or PC 13, REL, Velodyne dd15, Definitive Technology Reference, Martin Logan Descent, Paradigm servo 15, JL F113, James loudspeaker, Sunfire, M&K 350 or etc. Even though M&K is not in the game any longer, it would be worth the test effort.

This list should provide ample variety of sealed, ported, passive mixed and various power supplies and Xover features. It is lengthy but appropriate for the variables on the market.

The lowly overachiever Acoustic Research S112PS, said to be comparable to the Paradigm PDR12.

Sure it would be a blast to test those all, but where would I get them? I mean it's not like subwoofer companies are pressing me to test their subs. If you can provide me all those subs, I'd be happy to test them.

You asked so I answered. Maybe the question should be changed to Which subs would you like to see get tested that will never happen?

The HSU VTF-3 MK2 and the Axiom EP600 have been already tested. And you can approximate the Ultra/2 by looking at the PB12-Plus/2 results but add 1-2 dB more maximum output below 40-50 Hz and lower its THD figures by just a bit.

The Ultra/2 will be the loudest and cleanest of those three, though it will have the non flattest frequency response.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

No problem. If testing can happen and not in the same timeframe or with same exact circumstances then the questions of variables would inevitably come to question. It would be great if testing could happen such that many were tested the same way and time to dispell questioning of variables.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

I'd really like to have the Paradigmn Servo-15 V.1 tested.

I've had this sub for years and still can't believe how good it appears to be given it's size.

It only has a 400 watt amp, but provides house shaking low end that compresses in a very civilized manner when overdriven in my opinion.

I always thougt I'd like to see an Ilkka test done on it to confirm my suspicions that for the money (~$1500USD) it's a big bang. My reading is that the newer V.2 at ~$2200USD wasn't much of an improvement in performance.

I suppose getting hold of these commercial subs is tough though.... But you asked..

Av Talk has already measured it. You might want to check their forum for the results.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but I'd like to see the SVS 25-31PCi tested.

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see tested?

Maybe a bit too late, but I would like to see my own tested: Revel B15a, just to check out how it would fare against the lateste offerings. It's a sealed box, with 3 band PEQ, with a very good crossover, making it a easy integration.

Plus, it packs a hefty punch from 20 Hz. A nice feature I also use, is the low freq boost that may be selected via 12v trigger, which in combination with my TAG AV32rDP processor, makes it possible, in an automatic way, to have a bigger punch for DVD/TV viewing, and a flatter response for CD/radio/vinyl listening.

I'd really like to see the Outlaw LFM-1 sub tested--rather than being dismissed as a repackaged Hsu VTF or STF--just to see what it's capable of in it's own right.

Although it looks like this idea for testing has lost interest?

Not necessarily a complete subwoofer, but one driver I think would be cool to see tested is the JBL W15GTi, which is a "car audio" driver using the Hyperdynamics dual-coil/dual-gap motor with each coil running in the opposite direction for reduced inductance. I'm getting some insane-looking models using this driver in what I consider a tiny enclosure (~100L net) with dual PR's, and while it doesn't have the throw of, say, a Tumult, its design seems to have the most thought-out heat management scheme I've seen so power compression may be less of an issue.

I don't know about availability in Finland, but maybe you could find a local car-fi nut with one who wants to know what it can do.
We have the JBL W15GTi MKII available here. Let me see if I'm able to get one. And coincidentally I have two 18" TC-Sounds PRs on the way as we speak. What kind of tuning you were thinking about? 100 liters looks awfully small...

WOW!!! I would really like to see the W15 GTI tested. It is easily scaring neighbours in my car....Inside you get a quite easy 130 db. GP would be another issue though

Re: Which subwoofers would you like to see being tested?

Ilkka

Do you have any large drains, mineshafts, ventilation shafts or deep wells in your test area?

You could put an IB "outie" manifold over a deep well and prove once and for all that IB's rule absolutely!

You could lift a ventilation cowl off a flat roof and put the manifold over that?

Don't fall off the roof trying to measure 2 meters away for the microphone placement!

I know. I know!
