Hello,
Congratulations. You have been on a tear putting together some very nice Systems. The XPA-5 is a great Amplifier and will provide you with years of faithful service. You also now have great flexibility in regards to what Speakers you choose in the future.
Cheers,
JJ

Re: Second Emotiva UMC-1 Giveaway Review

I know this thread is a little old now, but I am curious why the sale. I take it you tried the Onkyo pre-outs with the UPA-1 and like what you heard? I ask because I am a UMC-1 owner too and am curious to know what it was. The other question I had was whether you tried the UMC-1 with any digital sources. I have found the UMC-1 sound quality to be great with the XPA-5. I had the XPA-5 with an older AVR as a pre/pro but the sound quality was't that great. Mind you it was an older Denon 2106. Anyways, bow do you like the XPA-5 with the other gear you have now that it for a while?

No I never did. I dont have the room or electrical power requirements for more than a pair of mono blocks. I loved them for the short time I was able to own them, combined with the UMC-1 is was a remarkably clean and dynamic system but simply not a practical option in my current situation. While $630 was a stellar value I personally am still a home theater guy at heart, I felt the money would be better spent upgrading power to my multichannel system. As for the UMC-1, it was a serious sacrifice in function. I use the Onkyo's dual hdmi outs, composite outs, Audussey DSX, USB inputs and 9.2 processing so it made sense to get rid of the UMC-1 as well.

No, this review was as far as I got, two channel analog for both rigs was the only thing I evaluated. With an elaborate existing system it would have been a major pain to incorporate it and evaluate its digital performance. I will say that from what I had seen I assume the UMC-1's digital performance is likely to be excellent.

It was a serious upgrade. Channel separation, dynamics, rear channel activity and dialog clarity have all been vastly improved. Despite being a bookshelf system I think my Infinity system is a little more demanding than one may think...

Re: Second Emotiva UMC-1 Giveaway Review

Glad you are enjoying the XPA-5. It certainly is a big upgrade from modern AVR amp sections. I noticed a huge difference with mine too when I first connected it to do Denon. I personally wanted the upcoming XMC (the UMCs high end counterpart) for the processor, but the Denon was about to die so I had to get something. It has actually been quite a surprise. All my connection are digital, HDMI or optical, and it has sounded excellent. I asked about the digital sources because I have heard mixed reviews about its analog preamp section. Good to hear you had a good experience with it, regardless about your final decision! And yeah, a surround processor is a little excessive for a zone three setup...

Re: Second Emotiva UMC-1 Giveaway Review

The UMC-1 just went on clearance for $499 shipped and includes a coupon for, I believe, 40% off a future upgrade to a new processor.

$499 for a new UMC-1 represents an amazing value. A UPA2 two channel 125 wpc amp for a clearance price of $299 seems like a pretty good deal as well.

As a former owner of a UMC1/UPA1 two channel system, and current owner of an XPA-5 (with another planned), I understand the almost psychotic-level of enthusiasm emotiva owners have for the brand. This company represents some of the finest values in gear today, these clearance prices drive that ideal home...

Re: Second Emotiva UMC-1 Giveaway Review

Hello,
Wow. $499 for a brand new SSP! That is a silly value and certainly makes going the Separates route unbelievably cost effective. And indeed there is quite a contingent of passionate Emotiva fans. I just get spooked when the Models cannot be discussed objectively.

Thankfully, while many here love Emotiva, we do not suffer from Members getting upset if anything less than outright glorification of the Brand is Posted. Some Forums, that is not the case.
Cheers,
JJ

I saw those prices and was shocked...crazy quality for the money. I've owned processors from Yamaha, Rotel, Lexicon, etc. and am currently (quite happily) using the UMC-1.
