WipEout 2048 for Vita Almost Had A Zombie Mode

Fast and futuristic racer WipEout 2048 for PlayStation Vita nearly had an unusual addition for a racing game, one that has recently been seen in games like Call of Duty: Black Ops. That’s right: WipEout 2048 almost had a zombie mode.

On the EU PS Blog, Lead Designer Karl Jones and Game Director Stuart Tilley revealed details about a hidden mode called “ZOMBIE” that didn’t make the cut for inclusion in the game. ZOMBIE would replace normal zombies with zombie “ships” — described as “1000 mph steel and carbon fibre machines of menacing evil” that “want you dead” — and would task players with surviving as long as they could by avoiding or taking out zombie ships.

Players would start alone on a track in darkness. Zombie ships would show up on “zombie radar” and approach quickly from a distance. A group would attack and ram the player, destroying themselves if necessary to take down the player. Players could pick up Cannons and (rarely) Quakes to defend themselves, but it would only be a matter of time before they died. As the mode progressed, more and more zombie ships would attack the player until surrounded, and eventually a zombie mothership would appear.

Unfortunately, ZOMBIE was a mode in prototype that had to go to the back burner and won’t be in WipEout 2048. However, Jones and Tilley say that while ZOMBIE mode is dead, “it’s not completely dead” (followed by a smiling face), possibly hinting at future DLC.

WipEout 2048
will launch with the PlayStation Vita on February 22, 2012.
