| Hello from Pacific Northwest GREAT forum. Been dabbling in A/V for lots o' years (yeah, I'm old), but finally getting serious. Building new home with dedicated theater, so I'll no doubt be asking a few questions. I'll appreciate any/all advice. Joe | |||

. She's agreed to let me have the bottom floor (game room and theater), if she can have what she wants on the main floor. No argument from me (I'm average, not crazy).

| Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Hey, Joe! Sounds like my wife! When we searched for our current home, our "deal" was that I could have the basement, while she had the upstairs (frankly, I could've care less if upstairs was a chicken coop). She is also amazingly understanding of my newfound toys: SVS subs. Just picture me watching a movie downstairs, shaking the entire house, and her reading in the living room, reaching to keep her cup o' tea from vibrating off the table (without even looking up from her book)... ![]() Peace... Vader Louvre attendant: Sacre bleu! ze frame on ze Mona Lisa broke and ze only one left iz too small. Andre, bring me ze scissors! One sub to rumble them all. One sub to shake them. One sub to humble them all. And in the darkness break them. The Overlook Theater - Not liable for injuries sustained while laughing. | |||

| Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Vader, Sounds very similar, although I think "tolerant" is closer to my wife's feelings about subwoofers rather than "understanding" . She's asked about soundproofing between the floors, and that's fine with me - every dollar I spend on acoustics can be easily explained as "soundproofing" . | |||

| Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Welcome to the Shack Joe, I hope you really like it here and hope and forsee you becoming one of our most upstanding users. EDIT: Easiest way of soundproofing a floor is to rip up the carpet and padding then remove the boards and line alot of plastic down, then fill it all with sandand staple-gun plastic over it, relay the boards and etc. ~Bob | |||

Don't meant to hijack this thread, but I have some questions. What kind of plastic do you recommend? Any links to a particular product? Would this be better than MLV? What kind of STC numbers would you expect? Can you cite any links to this kind of activity? It sounds like you're suggesting to remove the carpet, pad and subfloor. I wouldn't consider that "easy", and I've done quite a bit of home improvement type stuff... I posted here a while ago, about soundproofing my basement. Any suggestions? Edit: This post somehow magically appeared over at the link mentioned above. Maybe a mod moved it over there and didn't say anything, maybe I screwed up, but I will be happy to continue this discussion over there, as it is a more appropriate forum for a soundproofing discussion. Thanks! -- Otto

| Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Hi there, Welcome Average Joe! Didn't mean to get ahead of myself with my previous post and forget to say "Hi"! My wife puts up with this stuff, too, but I'm working in the living room rather than a dedicated theater in the basement. She sure enjoys the benefits, though! I'm trying to soundproof my basement for other reasons, and as I mentioned above, I have another thread over here where I'm asking about basement soundproofing -- you might have some interest or insight. So, welcome again, and have a great day! ![]() -- Otto | |||

| Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Thank you all. Actually, the soundproofing may be a little easier for me since home construction is just beginning, and I can incorporate it as we go. We're only at the excavation/trenching phase, so I've got some time yet. For those interested, the theater plan is for a 9' x 15' x 28' space with a wall dividing the viewing room from a projection/equipment room. I'd like to project through the wall (Panny AE900U) to a 9' or 10' screen, and have two rows of seats, but I haven't really determined the screening room length yet (was hoping for help from all of you regarding acoustics, throw distance, screen size, etc.). I'm sure the main focus will be on the upstairs area first , but I'll get there eventually. | |||

| Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Hey Mike, Got a long way to go, but once it's done, you're sure welcome to visit. And wecome to this forum from another Newbie. I've only been here a short time, but this is without a doubt the friendliest group of A/V enthusiasts on the web. ![]() | |||

| | Re: Hello from Pacific Northwest Hey Mike and welcome to the Shack! Okay... we've had a rush of members from Ohio... I guess it's Oregon's turn. I use to never hear much out of Oregon, but for the last several years it seems like the college football over that way has turned out some first class teams.... getting some well deserved recognition. | |||
