Hello from Iowa

Hello,

I just joined the shack a few days ago - great site. I'm a long time reader, first time writer (very corny, I know). We are big HT fans and are about to upgrade some of our components (primarily speakers and the receiver). My wife no longer wants to "see" the speakers so Inwall/Onwall/Inceiling is where we're going - I like the idea, too. But, as a result of discussions here and eslewhere, I've bargained her to allow SVS PB13 Ultras as new subs. She likes the rosenut. Nice huh? I'll try to put pics up to show what the space looks like. I'm looking forward to the advice and information as we progress.

I think I have the pictures in.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Not quite a HT question, but a question nonetheless. How do you post jpeg pics that fit the maximum size requirement? I had to copy and paste pics into Word and save as PDFs.

Re: Hello from Iowa

I can see why you want a couple of PB13 Ultra's for such a big room (open space). I have an PC Ultra that could really use a companion. But WAF issues.

Bob,

Good point about the open space (apprx 6000 cubic feet). Wife says "NO" to enclosing theater, though. Actually, it is open to the upstairs as well. I'm hopeful 2 Ultras will be enough to achieve the type of high quality bass decribed in these pages.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Bob,

In such a big space, do you really think the Ultras will make a difference? I'm wondering if there is just too much open space to achieve good reference type bass?

Is your theater enclosed or open?

How does the PC Ultra perform? Because of its smaller foot print, I've considered a combo of a PB13 and a PC13 with the PC going behind and to the left of the couch (where it curves) as you face the screen and the PB replacing an end table.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Open spaces are very bass eaters...you may need multiple 18" to have DD ref. bass loudness

The PCU still really shakes the floor (carpet, on particle board, on 2x8 wood joists). But the family room it is in is seperated only by a kitchen bar from the kitchen and has big openings from the kitchen and a hallway to dining room and living room that have vaulted ceilings. So I get to really feel the low bass but not "pressurize" the room.

I even tried to de-couple the PCU from the floor with a big heavy paver block, cushion, and round platform. That did help with smoothing out the response but Master & Commander DVD still shakes the floor.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Bob,

Do you have to enclose the HT in order to pressurize the room? I mean in practical terms because I guess if you got many large powerful subs you could pressurize a house.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Have not yet had the opportunity to close off a listening room yet. My other setup with a DIY sub is in my lower level which is also a very large space. So I don't know the "pressurized" feeling.

Bet it is when you can achieve +115 dB SPL at 20 Hz.

Re: Hello from Iowa

Thanks for the welcome Sonnie.

I saw the Cedar Creek Cinema come to life in an HT design thread. Very nice. Never thought of installing a floorstander horizontally as a center channel. That's clever.

I have a thread in the HT design area seeking thoughts and opinions on our redesign. If you have any helpful suggestions, I'd love to have you weigh in.

Thanks,

kjlewie
