Hello from Hong Kong!

Hi Everyone,

I'm from Hong Kong and has just joined the forum.

I'm a two-channel audiophile just getting into home theater. I use Lowther horns as my main speakers, driven by 45 Single Ended Triode amplifiers with just 2W of output. I do have a Velodyne DD-18 to supplement the low bass though. 8-)

I ran into this forum when researching sub-woofers. The DD-18 I have now can shake the floor but a bit slow compared to my previous REL Stadium II. I did the change only because the REL does not have enough input sensitivity to keep up with my mains, which are at 106dB/W sensitivity. The DD-18 have the gain but I'm not quite satisfied with its 'speed' so the quest continues ...

On a separate issue, I'm also long bothered by the apparent audio compression when watching DD 5.1 DVD in downmixed stereo configuration. I have searched and even asked around but no one seems to be aware of this problem. I'm so happy to read the downmix thread in this forum, confirming that I'm not hearing things.

If anyone knows of a processor which does not compress while downmix please let me know. Adding a full-blown 5.1 speaker configure is not an option for me so have to stick with two channels for now.

Thanks for reading this. Happy listening and watching!

Regards,
Jack Lee

Hello Jack Lee, welcome to the Shack.
We're a pretty diverse crowd here with lots of people who know a lot about a lot I'm sure someone here knows the answer to your down mix question, but unfortunately I don't.

Hi Jack and welcome to the Shack!

Sounds like you are a pretty serious two channel guy. Maybe you can post us some pics of your setup over in the Gallery. I'd love to see it and hear more about it.

Re: Hello from Hong Kong!

Thank you nova and Sonnie for the warm welcome. I'll take some photos of my system later for sharing with forum members.

Actually I'd love to have a full 5.1 home theater one day. My medium-term plan is to get a projector first, now eyeing the Optoma HD81. Hopefully Optoma will fix all those bugs soon ... too many toys too little $$$

Jack
