Hi guys, new member from the UK

Hi there everyone,

I normally frequent the AVForums in the UK and while doing some posting there I saw a reference to The Home Theatre Shack so I thought I would take a look.

My main areas of interest is HTPC (I currently have two rigs fed from a 1TB NAS server for movie/music storage) & DIY speaker building. I have just this week finished building a subwoofer for my second system (I have a KEF KHT2005.2 setup in my main room) and I'm very pleased with the sound. I just need to veneer it now to make it look nice and keep the wife happy.

It's allways good to see how other poeple, especially in other countries, are doing things to get ideas.

Anyway, looking forward to looking around these forums and then trying to convince my finantial adviser (wife) that we need to buy more kit

By for now,

Russell

Hi Russell and welcome to the Shack!

While we are rather small up against AVF... we are growing fast and I think you'll find we have a pretty good DIY following.

You are more than welcome to use our Home Theater Photos area for hosting your images and you can share them with us a thread.

Russell,

Welcome to the forums. I agree with Sonny, the DIY sections here seem to be pretty active.

Another resource of the site is REW - REW or Room EQ Wizard, is a free piece of software for your computer. The software plots freqency response. All thats needed is a basic sound card, and some form of Microphone. Many users find they already have all the needed components, as many SPL meters have a connector you can hook to your sound card.

You can find info on the Room EQ Wizard at the top of every page here.

I'd love to see pictures of your DIY projects, and please feel free to post in any thread on this forum - Get your feet wet right away!

Re: Hi guys, new member from the UK

Thanks for the welcome guy's,

I started out with very good intentions of taking pictures to document the building of my subwoofer. However, I got too engrossed in building it and didn't take any. However, I've got to dismantle it again soon to veneer it, so I will take some pictures of it then.

Basically, it is a 37 litre sealed design with two downward firing 8 inch drivers in an isobarik configuration (to halve the required volume) with a built in KEF PSW2000 subwoofer amplifier panel that I happened to have spare.

Anyway, thanks once again for the welcome

Russell

Well, here are some pics before the veneer.

http://www.hometheatershack.com/phot...01/ppuser/5846

Tha actual construction is finished and the box sealed. I am now just doing some listening tests before going ahead and veneering it and putting feet/legs on.

Will post more pics when that is all done.

On a side note, I have now ordered a Radio Shack SPL meter so will soon be able to do some proper tests on it with the Room EQ Wizard.

Nice job on that DIY sub. I wish I had the talent and patience for woodworking.

Welcome to "The Shack".

Very nice work Russell...Do you have any drawings of the design that you can show us?

Re: Hi guys, new member from the UK

I'm afraid I don't have any drawings, well except a few scribbles on a piece of paper.

I actually used "AJ Sealed Designer 2.0" software to calculate the box volume from the T/S parameters and then used the built in box calculator to work out the dimensions, constraining certain dimensions to make sure it would fit in the available space in the room. I then increased the volume by another 3 litres to allow for the Isobarik chamber and then increased the length by 10cm to allow for the sealed compartment for the amplifier panel.

All corners are half rebated to give additional strength and double the surface area for the glue. Corners are also screwed, mainly just to hold them together tightly while the glue set. Eventually the screws will be covered by the veneer. Everything was made from 18mm (3/4 inch) plywood except the speaker baffle board which is 18mm MDF. There was no reason for the choice of materials other than it was what I had lying around in the garage.

Once again, the drive units were used because I had them already in the loft. I originally bought them brand new about 10 years ago but never actually got round to using them. They are not the best drive units by any means but I am quite surprised how good they do sound. I may well replace them some time in the future with some better ones, but for now they are fine.
