Greetings from Southern Idaho

Hello All,

I have been an avid audio/HT enthusiast for about 10 years now. I am just now starting to to put together some decent equipment (both audio and video). Within the next five years I plan to build a dedicated home theater room (I have been saving my pennies). I am trying to collect as much home theater knowledge as I can before I finalize my plans so I can "do it right the first time". I am looking forward to spending some more time on this forum.

-Ken

Hey Ken and welcome to the shack.

There's lots of good info on this forum, and acoustics are one of this forums strong points.

Make sure you post a question over in the acoustics forums and you'll get some good advice on your new home theater.

Hi Ken and welcome...

If you can "do it right the first time", you'll be one of the few...
There's invariably things that you feel could have been done differently or better..

I dreamed about having a home theatre for years..Looking at countless build threads and learning everything I could...and finally built my theatre about 6 months ago...
Already I can see things that I could have done better or differently...

It never ends...as many will testify...

LOL prof - and words to live and die by!

I'm in the same camp - SO much I would have done differently!

I wonder though - if we polled everyone who's already been there, if the changes would all be consitent.

For example, I used 2 layers of drywall separated by a Z channel to help contain sound - no way would I do this ever again - staggered studs is the way to go, but I wonder if someone with staggered studs is out there wishing he'd used Z channel (I'm guessing not!)

Re: Greetings from Southern Idaho

Jack and Ken,

My biggest mistake was to have a "shadow box" around the screen...

I always thought a shadow box looked cool on theatres I'd seen, and they are good for helping ambient light problems..
Well, I don't have any ambient light problems as it turned out and watching movies is a bit like looking at them through a window frame..
But the biggest mistake I made having a shadow box was it limited me to the size screen I could use..
At the time I thought I would never want a bigger screen (106"diagonal), but just recently I found a great deal on an Anamorphic lens setup, and now I need to go wider on the screen..
This means that I will have to re-build my prosceniums to fit the new 110" wide screen...

Does it ever end!!!??????
