Greetings everyone!

I just entering the world of a true home theater. I have had surround sound for more than 2 decades. I have had Beta, VHS, Laserdisc, Divx, DVD and BluRay. I just replaced the 62" DLP RP in my living room with a Sharp 70".

However, when it comes to projectors, I have no clue.

I love going to the movie theater, but with 2 young children and the rising price of tickets and popcorn, I would rather stay at home and watch movies in the comfort of my basement.

When I was in the Army I used to reconfigure our Fire Arms Training Simulator (FATS) to play my LaserDisc movies on a 10'x10' screen. It was basically a large portable CRT projector with a LaserDisc player attached to a computer. I have longed for that movie theater feeling at my own convenience ever since.

I have joined the forums to learn from everyone's experiences and expertise.

I loook forward to interacting with many of you and want to thank everyone for helping those of us with less knowledge.

Jason

Welcome to the Home Theater Shack Jason!

Someone asked for this so I'll put it back here in my sig. Keep in mind that the raw numbers are old and I haven't updated it for awhile. Gain readings are there as well.

Re: HT Noob

Thanks all!!!

My apologies in advance for my rambling threads. Working time in to chat between 2 jobs, 2 kids under age 3, and working on finishing my basement, I try to cramb everything into one thread far too often.

Please see my new thread about Media Room design if you don't believe me

Re: HT Noob

Jason, welcome! We all start as Noob's at some point! As far as the cinema experience, at some point our individual systems give us more pleasure than the cinema experience. It may take a long time of trial and error with equipment to get to that point (hopefully not), but it can and will!

Personally, most movies I'd much rather watch at home than in theaters; not just because of the convenience factor, rather, I get a picture and more enjoyable sound from my system than I can at any theater. The only thing missing is the sheer size of the image. Home Theater projectors help, however I have found (by trial and error) that I prefer the image of a direct view monitor as opposed to a projector.
