Yamaha Does it Again November 1, 2009 Designtist (Central Wisconsin) I recently purchased a Yamaha True Sound receiver for my shop system and have been very happy with that unit. When our Sony home theatre developed a center channel problem, Yamaha was very high on the search list and the Yamaha RX-V363BL more than lived up to my expectations. This unit's sound quality blows the Sony right out of the water straight out of the box without any fine tuning. We are still using the Sony surround speakers and powered sub for sound and the difference in sound quality and surround decoding is amazing. The Scene presets work very well and make it easy to find the best sound field for the type of audio you are listening to. Watching DVD's has never sounded so good in our home and listening to music is great too. Even more improved is the decoding of audio signals when watching TV programs through a satellite dish; no more fuzzy sounding background noises and poorly implemented surround noise, only the right sounds in the right amount to make it all work in a very natural and believable way.
br /
br /I can't stress enough how much of an improvement the Yamaha is over the Sony, I am loving the improvement and look forward to upgrading the speakers in the future.
Quality from start to finish for the bargain-minded users October 28, 2009 Pork Chop (Lisbon, Portugal) The Yamaha RXV 363 5.1 dolby digital, Pro Logic II Audio Receiver,
br /is the low-end product offering in Yamaha's lineup, but carries
br /forth outstanting quality, that is on-par with their brand name,
br /and marketplace reputation.
br /
br /For those reading this, and getting no sound from their 5.1
br /speakers, there are 2 aspects to look at. First, on the unit
br /itself, press the Speakers AB OFF button (which mutes otherwise the
br /FL and FR). Next, also on the unit, press "Straight Effect" in
br /order to remove the unit from a mode that basically mutes all 5.1
br /speakers except the center speaker, to configure it for 5.1. The
br /unit itself also requires a 6 or 8 Ohm selection in terms of
br /speakers wired to it.
br /
br /That said, I have this unit comprising a home theatre with a YAMAHA
br /NS-SP1800BL 5.1 speaker set (also, its low-end speaker set coupled
br /with 2 pairs of solder-type banana plugs, 100 FT of 14 AWG Gauge
br /speaker wire, 2 pairs of component cables, an additional 12 FT
br /subwoofer coaxial digital wire, to add to the kit-included coaxial
br /wire that Yamaha provides, usable between the unit and a digital TV
br /receiver or DVD player.
br /
br /The unit has no trouble in detecting Pro Logic II or DD streams,
br /but does take a novice at least a good 20 minutes configuring all
br /aspects of the home theatre, such as size of speakers, length of
br /the speaker wire between each and every speaker and the receiver
br /itself, the crossover frequency at which point the subwoofer takes
br /over, and other aspects.
br /
br /The FL and FR require banana plugs, for the reason that the "B"
br /setting in the unit,is for an alternative pair of front speakers
br /that a rare user may also have on hand.
br /
br /The unit goes thru 240 watts of AC Power when turned on, at minimum
br /suggesting that perhaps regular non-digital audio might be
br /appropriate in most TV viewing scenarios, leaving the unit on
br /standby, for example, for consumption and cost control purposes.
br /
br /The instructions are fine, and the interface of the remote control
br /is extremely intuitive, after a few minutes of experimentation, but
br /the user manuals for the 5.1 speakers and this receiver are a MUST
br /before anything is carried out by the installer.
br /
br /The HDMI were declined in my setup, in favor of component cables
br /that are fine, but as video passthru from DVD or digital TV or
br /output to the TV.
br /
br /Conversely, weakness, is a single AC-3 port ("coaxial") in the
br /back, for those wanting to seamless interchange with their remote
br /between digital TV and a DVD player, both lacking optical outputs,
br /in my particular case. As said, only 1 AC3 input is present.
br /
br /Another weakness is the lack of s-video input and output
br /(passthru), requiring thus a s-video source to be directly wired
br /into the TV, without this unit in the middle, if the digital TV box
br /lacks component or HDMI outputs.
br /
br /With a Blue Ray DVD player, the issue of seamless changeover will
br /be solved, from an optical output.
br /
br /In sum, Yamaha definitely offers something for the bargain-minded
br /end user, both in speakers and in receivers, while maintaining
br /quality from start to finish, allowing for a great home theatre
br /experience.
Receiver is Very Nice September 21, 2009 E.J. (Louisiana) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This receiver was very adequate for its intended purpose and a good value for the price I paid for it.
Awesome Receiver September 11, 2009 Darrell Brangham 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This particular receiver is great with all sort of things you can do to it you will have a blast customizing it. For those who just want to get a receiver this still is easy to use and fun. It has many plugins in the back and HDMI. Also get the ipod dock with it because they go together like spaghetti and meatball.
High performance . . . but . . . August 20, 2009 S. Carroll 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This receiver performs well technically, but learning how to operate it is time-consuming and frustrating. The procedure for setting it in up the various configurations is anything but intuitive. The manual is written in a style that is difficult to understand. I would have paid fifty dollars more to get similar performance but without the hassle.
