Amazon.com Product Description Harman Kardon's AVR 635 7.1-channel audio/video surround receiver includes the company's latest features and technologies on top of near-universal surround-format compatibility. Internally, the receiver is engineered for extraordinary sonic performance, featuring a discrete-output amplifier section that delivers seven channels of high-current (+/- 50 Amps), ultrawide-bandwidth amplification--7 x 75 watts into 8 ohms, 20 to 20,000 Hz with less than 0.07 percent THD--in addition to state-of-the-art 192 kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converters and a high-power Texas Instruments 32-bit DSP processor.
Take a closer look at the AVR 635's connections. You can also view the unit's front panel and remote control in detail. | The AVR 635's wealth of cutting-edge technologies also includes quadruple-crossover bass management, automatic digital input polling, video cross-conversion (which converts all composite- and S-video sources to high-resolution component-video), bidirectional RS-232 connectivity with software and firmware upgradeability, A/V sync delay, and a slot-mounted tuner that may be upgraded at a future date to accommodate HD Radio. Surround sound features include Dolby Virtual Speaker, Dolby Headphone processing, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx processing (which provides an expansive, full-range 7.1-channel program from any stereo or 5.1-channel source). The receiver handles all other popular formats (including Dolby Digital EX and Dolby Digital 5.1), all standard DTS modes (including 6.1 DTS-ES Discrete, DTS-ES Matrix, DTS Neo:6, Cinema 6.1/5.1, and Music 6.1/5.1), and even the latest DTS 96/24 high-resolution audio technology. In addition, the AVR 635 provides HDCD (High-Definition Compatible Digital) processing to deliver the best possible CD playback quality from HDCD-encoded discs. You also get Harman's proprietary Logic 7 audio for enhanced multichannel reproduction from both matrix-encoded and 2-channel recordings. The latest implementation of Logic 7 provides improved post-processing for the rear surround channels. The receiver's many audio and video connections include three wide-bandwidth, assignable HDTV-compatible component-video inputs. The AVR 635 also features multiroom/multisource operation with independent, simultaneous playback of two program sources, assignable back surround amplifier channels, A-BUS connectivity, and a Zone II remote. The A-BUS Ready system simplifies multiroom connectivity without external amplifiers. It uses a standard Cat5/Ethernet cable to connect the receiver's rear panel in one room to a Harman Kardon AB 1 A-BUS-compatible amplifier/control module in a separate room. Along with its extensive video connectivity, the receiver offers a array of digital and analog audio connections, including multiple coaxial and optical digital audio inputs and outputs. It sports both analog and digital front-panel inputs, 6-/8-channel direct audio inputs, and 7.1-channel preamp outputs to accommodate a DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, or universal player. The AVR 635 is also among the first receivers to include EzSet/EQ, which provides automated system calibration and room equalization, which greatly simplifies installation as it improves system performance by tailoring the output of the receiver to your speakers, compensating for the effects of room acoustics. The receiver's quadruple-crossover bass-management system lets you choose from six different crossover frequencies for the front L/R, center, surround L/R, and surround back L/R speakers. Most receivers and DVD players have far more limited crossover filtering or none at all. Moreover, you can set different speaker-size configurations for different AVR 635 input sources according to your needs. You get a high-quality FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets and a Listener Preference System that lets you specify a surround mode according to the program source. You can also set speaker-channel levels for each program source and DSP format (for example, the subwoofer level can be set differently for multichannel movie viewing and 2-channel CD music listening). What's in the Box Receiver, remote control, remote batteries, an EzSet/EQ microphone, FM wire/AM loop antennas, warranty information, and user's manual.
Product Description The number of channels is only one factor of many when considering home-theater surround performance. Harman Kardon AVR635 focuses on sound quality with the most fidelity throughout the listening spectrum for superior realism and a pleasurable experience. Awesome Unit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! June 20, 2008 Ok I have owned mine for a few years now but had to rate this baby. I read all the reviews and with the exception of the person with the bad customer service complaint and the person with the defective unit, the rest about say it all (There is bad customer service in the world unfortunately, which has nothing to do with the unit and you can receive defect electronic equipment from time to time). I think these reviews should be the actual product. This unit rocks and is by far the best for the money. I researched for a month before I purchased it but have always liked HK receivers. It's connected to Infinity Beta series speakers (Front, Rear, Center and Sub)with a Samsung 46" DLP TV and an XBOX 360 Elite gaming system plus a Sony DVD recorder and a DVR from my cable company...WOW
Customer Service is the pits! March 22, 2008 I had the receiver for less than a year when the picture on the screen would go red. I took the receiver to a warranty service center in November 2007. It is March 21st and I just received a replacement (sent to the wrong address by Harmon Kardon). I have been 5 months without using my speakers.
When it works it is great. But when it doesn't, forget it. When I tried to call customer service to follow up on the shipping of the replacement, I was hung up on and disconnected 5 times. After 2 hours, I finally gave up. The next day, I spoke to someone and they were unable to help.
I would not recommend purchasing this or any Harmon Kardon product just because of their quality of service.
Sound off ! January 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Read other reviews first, then ordered. Really think the negative reviews are picky. What matters is sound, and this unit is incredible. Friends now want to hang out and watch movies, games, or just TV. Easy hook up and the setup for the speakers was a hoot! Play the beginning of 'Pitch Black' and you'll never go back!
Very worthwhile, one of the better high end mass fi receivers September 11, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This receiver is much better than similar products I've owned from Sony ES, Pioneer Elite, etc. I think the sound is better than some of the most famous audiophile gear, such as a hybrid tube/solid Counterpoint gear I tested it against. I'm fairly demanding of audio gear (my reference rig was a single-ended triode setup with no preamp or anything else to muddy the sound, to give you an idea). This isn't quite the ultimate audiophile rig, but it comes surprisingly close and it does have a really exceptional combination of quality, features, and convenience. I'm very happy with the sound quality. The manual could be better, but it is usable. The ability to configure the receiver to drive another room was a key feature for me; my better half wanted to be able to hear music or TV in the study, and this does it nicely. The audio quality from the tuner is surprisingly good; it makes me think there's far less market opportunity for the new HD tuners than I'd thought previously, but I'll keep an open mind! Still, with a strong signal the FM quality is quite surprisingly good. One drawback: there is noticable delay and a flicker in the video switching as it tries to lock onto a video signal when I change channels in my vcr tuner, and I haven't noticed it doing anything (positive or otherwise) for the video signal, but I'm just using composite so it's not a fair test. I like the extensive back panel connectivity, too; it enables a lot of flexibility in how one uses this product. I also found the EZ set self equalization easy to use. At first I wasn't impressed with the auto equalization, but after a lot more testing and experimentation it can really make a significant improvement. It's really pretty impressive, and it succeeds in compensating for a lot of speaker placement challenges and room accoustics issues that can be very hard (and very expensive & inconvenient) to address otherwise. The end result is a very significant improvement in system performance, but it took some "fiddling" with the settings. Overall, I have to say I'm extremely happy with this item, and I honestly don't know of a better integrated receiver solution.
Very Low August 7, 2006 3 out of 14 found this review helpful
I purchased this expensive receiver from Amazon/Etronics in early July and received it with the volume light not working and immediately returned it by UPS. I have not heard one word from Etronics since. It's as if my receiver does not even exist. I have sent a dozen emails but never a reply.
