Great receiver May 27, 2008 Great system. Easy to use and install. I would like to have a little more power for when I need more volume.
At This Price, Nothing Else Even Comes Close!! May 1, 2008 I purchased the 146 refurbished about 2weeks ago for under $200 dollars. It replaced my pioneer vsx-516 which is a very good reciever but, The Harman sounds 10x better. This reciever is matched with my Kef 2005.2 speaker system. All I want to do is watch action movies now. The sound is that good. Music sounds rich and warm. Please pay no mind to 30wpc rating, It plays very loud and clear. My only complaint is that it doesn't process audio via hdmi only video. And you can't see any video via 6ch input when hdmi is hooked up, you have to hook up a component input. Too many extra wires for me. So I won't be keeping it long for that reason only. For an entry level reciever...IMO, there isn't anything out there that compares to it. It gives you High-End sound quality. I'd reccomend to friend.
Nice piece of equipment But.. March 25, 2008 Harman Kardon AVR 146 Home Theater Receiver with iPod Control and HDMI connectivityThis Is a very nice piece of equipment and is quite a handful to learn about. I had it for a month now and still don't have all the command and nuiances figured out. It has great sound and adaptibilty. Though I am not sure if I am getting all I can get from the system. I have contacted Harman Kardon ( they were very helpful)and other companies I have the unit controlling to try and get the most from the system Istill experimenting with contol options and set up menus but for all the tinkering I am still not sure if this is the end all. Once I learn more I can say that this is a really great buy . But for right now it just GOOD.
Perfect for those on a budget (or those that don't want to spend a grand) February 26, 2008 I've had this receiver now for three months and could not be more pleased with my purchase. I spent six months looking for a new receiver and couldn't seem to find what I was looking for in the sub $400 price range and I couldn't justify spending more at this time. Black Friday deals bailed me out big time, because this receiver is the best of both worlds.
Here are the three reasons I purchased this receiver:
1. It has HDMI pass through. This cuts down the cables going to my TV to 2, One for HDMI, one for the analog on screen display. I've heard some people complain about their receivers creating "noise" in their video, but I've never had this problem.
2. Lots of audio in jacks. With 3 digital (2 on the back, one on the front) in and 3 coaxial you shouldn't have any problem getting the most out of whatever device you're connecting.
3. The on screen display on this receiver covers all the bases and is very user friendly. The only problem with it is that you have to have an analog cable (ie s-video or composite) connected to your TV to use it.
If there is a con to this system it's that it doesn't have auto eq. So grab that tape measure and be prepared to figure out your distances.
I've noticed some people shy away from the Watts per channel rating. In this price range you don't have to worry too much about it. Most brands (ie Sony) inflate their wattage to the maximum peak amount, not what the receiver can do consistently. For a small to mid-size room this thing puts out more than enough power to make your home theater rich, full and vibrant.

My system consist of a Harman Kardon AVR 146 Home Theater Receiver WHICH I PURCHASE DIRECTLY FROM HARMON KARDOM REFURBISH THRU EBAY ( $172.50) , Harman Kardon HKTS 14 6-Piece Loudspeaker System ALSO PURCHASE FROM EBAY HARMON KARDON STORE FOR ( $188.00 )(This is a factory-remanufactured unit carrying the original factory warranty, as do all other items i purchase thru Harmon / kardon Ebay store ) AT 30 WATTS PER CHANNEL I AM AMAZED ABOUT THE DYNAMIC RANGE OF THIS SYSTEM, IT HAS MORE FEATURES THAN I CAN POSSIBLY USE AND MINE SYSTEM SOUNDED BETTER BEFORE I STARTED "TWEAKING" SOME OF THE SETTINGS SO I WENT BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS ON MINE ,,,I SEE UNITS THAT COST OVER $400 THAT DO NOT PROCESS SOUND THRU THE HDMI CABLE ,,,SO IF YOU STILL HAVE TO CONNECT TO OPTICAL OR DIGITAL COAX CABLE TO OBTAIN THE SOUND , THEN THIS RECEIVER WOULD BE SUFFICIENT FOR YOU ,THE ONLY FEATURE I WISH IT HAD IS A AUTOMATIC SPEAKER CALIBRATION,,,BESIDES THAT A GREAT UNIT FOR THE PRICE !!!!!
THIS RECIEVER IS DRIVING MY THE FRONT SPEAKERS WHICH ARE MOUNTED ON A SET OF Harman Kardon HTFS2 Floor Stands ( WHICH I ORDER FROM B& H PHOTO FOR $69.99 AND THE SURROUND SPEAKERS MOUNTED ON Gallery Noir Wood/glass Speaker Stands ORDER THRU AMAZON FOR $58.99 CONNECTED TO Rocketfish Universal Wireless Rear Speaker Kit BOUGHT AT EBAY FOR A RIDICULOUS PRICE OR $39.99 , Harman Kardon FL8385 5-Disc CD Changer ALSO PURCHASE THRU EBAY HARMON / KARDON STORE FOR $64.00 AND A Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player PURCHASE THRU AMAZON FOR A INCREDIBLE $166.96 ( SPECIAL HD- DVD OFFER AND A WORK RELATED GIFT CERTIFICATED THAT I APPLIED TO THIS PURCHASE ,,,VIDEO BEING SENT TO A SAMSUNG HL-S4666W 46" HIGH DEFINITION REAR PROJECTION DLP TV WHICH WAS THE ONLY THING I PURCHASE LOCALLY BUT AT A GREAT PRICE OF $ 899.00 AT REX'S. INITIALLY I HAD THE REAR SPEAKER'S WIRED TO MY RECEIVER ,,,AFTER CONNECTING THEM TO THE WIRELESS UNIT I REALLY CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN SOUND FROM THE RECEIVER TO THE ROCKETFISH UNIT SO I AM VERY PLEASE AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS UNIT IT PROVIDED ME WITH A GREAT SOLUTION !!
THE COMBINATION OF THE RECEIVER AND SPEAKER'S CREATE A SOUND SYSTEM THAT IS INCREDIBLE FOR THE AMOUNT OF MONEY I SPEND !!!! IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING ANYTHING ELSE YOU OWE TO YOUR SELF TO LISTEN TO THIS PKG. I HAVE MINE CONNECTED THRU THE OPTICAL INPUTS FOR BOTH MY HD-DVD PLAYER AND CABLE BOX AND THE SOUND ON DTS FROM THE HD - DVD PLAYER IS PURE ECSTASY!!!! THE SUB IS POWERFUL ENOUGH THAT I CANNOT TURN MINE PAST 1/4 VOLUME IF YOU PURCHASE THESE THE HARMON/KARDON SPEAKER'S THE STANDS ARE A MUST I PURCHASE MINE PIANO BLACK INSTEAD OF SILVER ,,ALSO I ONLY HAVE ONE CABLE CONNECTED TO MY DLP SINCE I AM USING THE AVR 146 AS MY PASS THRU (CABLE BOX TO HDMI #1 AND HD-DVD PLAYER TO HDMI #2 )THE PICTURE AND SOUND IS AWESOME !!!!!
