Product Description In the case of Onkyo A/V receivers, ?entry level? means a whole lot more than just affordability and standard functionality. You won't find a better example than the TX-SR506, which also offers high-definition media capability and advanced sound correction technologies. With an HDMI platform handling 1080p video from three sources, the TX-SR506 brings polish and peak performance to high-definition displays and sources. Legendary Onkyo amplification drive and power set the foundation for delivering bass crunch and vocal clarity. The TX-SR506 uses Audyssey 2EQ to counter distortion created by walls, furniture and other objects. This technology detects speaker distance, and then sets levels, delays, and crossovers, while also measuring room acoustics and you get to enjoy a sweeping soundstage even at low volumes. Easily holding its own among higher-priced A/V receivers, the TX-SR506 adds serious impetus to entry-level home theater. Great Buy for the price October 9, 2008 Ron Hoffman (Edinburgh, IN USA) This replaced my older JVC receiver and the difference in sound and its quality is very satisfying. Clear sound can be heard at much lower volume levels than the JVC. In surround sound the quality is great, escpecially at this price. It has HDMI but this lower end model is only a run through, you need an optical cable for the sound which is very good. Can't go wrong with this receiver.
Dissappointment October 6, 2008 Nate Despite the many warnings about the HDMI Pass through I purchased this anyway expecting the toslink digital audio cable to pass the 7.1 signal from my PS3. Then I learn that DIGITAL AUDIO CABLE DOES NOT PASS 7.1 it does not have enough bandwitdh to pass more than 5.1. The only way to receive true 7.1 is through HDMI 1.1 or greater and as this receiver only passes through and does not extract audio there is absolutely no way to give this receiver 7.1 surround sound... Yes it may push sound to 7.1 speakers but you are only getting a converted 5.1 signal. WHY EVEN CALL THIS A 7.1 RECEIVER? It's very misleading!!! I allways try and do as much research as possible prior to purchasing any equipment, I should have looked longer before this purchase. It will take some time for me to save more money to purchase a new receiver with HDMI Repeater.

I am using the receiver as an audio amp to play my digital recorder and guitar through. Works great and came sooner than they said.
Great Bang For The Buck September 8, 2008 C. Homner One of the best bang's for buck on the market. After reading all the reviews on many models I settled on this SR506. Set up is a little tricky but, all in all easy. Unit runs a little warm so make sure you have proper ventilation. The only down fall I can see with this unit, is that when you're running Zone 2, the rear surround speakers turn off. There for this is truly not a 7.1 in Zone 1 when you are running both Zones. When returning to just Zone 1, you must reset the rear surround speakers back up again(not hard but a pain). Other than that, I would highly recommend this unit to anyone.
Ideal for home theatre projector September 6, 2008 Kedar Janwadker (Atlanta, GA United States) I have been using ONKYO 506 for over a month now. As many other reviewers have said it will pass only video via HDMI but it does not bother me as I use the HDMI to connect to a projector (even if it had passed the audio it was of no use to me). The setup is easy, the sound is crystal clear even at high volumes. It is more than what I need for my mid size media room. The best part is you only pay $200 - why spend more for a few extra features you might never use !
