Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
In the case of Onkyo A/V receivers, ?entry level? means a whole lot more than just affordability and standard functionality. You won't find a better example than the TX-SR506, which also offers high-definition media capability and advanced sound correction technologies. With an HDMI platform handling 1080p video from three sources, the TX-SR506 brings polish and peak performance to high-definition displays and sources. Legendary Onkyo amplification drive and power set the foundation for delivering bass crunch and vocal clarity. The TX-SR506 uses Audyssey 2EQ to counter distortion created by walls, furniture and other objects. This technology detects speaker distance, and then sets levels, delays, and crossovers, while also measuring room acoustics and you get to enjoy a sweeping soundstage even at low volumes. Easily holding its own among higher-priced A/V receivers, the TX-SR506 adds serious impetus to entry-level home theater. 5 out of 5 stars onkyo-tx-sr506   September 19, 2008

I am using the receiver as an audio amp to play my digital recorder and guitar through. Works great and came sooner than they said.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bang For The Buck   September 8, 2008
One of the best bang's for buck on the market. After reading all the reviews on many models I settled on this SR506. Set up is a little tricky but, all in all easy. Unit runs a little warm so make sure you have proper ventilation. The only down fall I can see with this unit, is that when you're running Zone 2, the rear surround speakers turn off. There for this is truly not a 7.1 in Zone 1 when you are running both Zones. When returning to just Zone 1, you must reset the rear surround speakers back up again(not hard but a pain). Other than that, I would highly recommend this unit to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for home theatre projector   September 6, 2008
I have been using ONKYO 506 for over a month now. As many other reviewers have said it will pass only video via HDMI but it does not bother me as I use the HDMI to connect to a projector (even if it had passed the audio it
was of no use to me). The setup is easy, the sound is crystal clear even at high volumes. It is more than what I need for my mid size media room. The best part is you only pay $200 - why spend more for a few extra features you might never use !

3 out of 5 stars 3 HDMI ports do NOT extract audio! Beware!   September 2, 2008

This receiver is pretty impressive on paper and visually by oogling at all the ports on the back. The biggest thing to note, I believe, is that the 3 HDMI inputs are "pass-through" and do not extract audio and play it through the speakers connected to the receiver! (the audio will only go to the TV!)

You NEED a secondary cable for audio (for each HDMI input!) and then you must configure the receiver to pair the corresponding HDMI input with the audio source. For example, if I have my Xbox 360 connected via HDMI, it is total FAIL because the optical audio connector for Xbox only exists on the component out... so I must use the component output for the Xbox instead, and pair it with a TOSLINK optical cable setup on the receiver.

While being an excellent receiver for the price, this single ridiculous gotcha makes the technology of HDMI near totally moot and could lead to some annoying workarounds as I have done for my home theater.

3 out of 5 stars 1/2 HDMI   September 2, 2008

From the manual, page 29
"If you want to listen through the speakers connected to the AV receiver, in addition to an HDMI connection you'll need to make a separate analog or digital audio connection."

That is, one of the high points of HDMI (the fact that one cable transmits both audio and video) is completely lost in this receiver, since a second cable is needed for the speakers to function. Furthermore, the unit has 3 HDMI inputs but only 2 optical audio inputs.

TO me this doesn't make much sense...
