Nice Piece April 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm very happy with this receiver, it has a lots of power and sounds great through my JBL'S. I'm not even using the surround sound capabilitys yet but just the stereo mode sounds great with the CD's, DVD'S, and TV. It looks great too with the blue lights.
pioneer receiver 7.1 February 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
4 out 5 stars- a good reciever for the price and $200 dollars cheaper than best buy. To save much time and aggravation however- please remember that you won't get sound with just the HDMI wire connection- you must add an audio (optical/ etc..) wire hook up as well.Pioneer VSX-917V-K Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Pass-through audio January 25, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is the most important thing you need to know about this receiver. If you are either hoping to have only one cable from your tv to your receiver -- or if you are planning on enjoying true 7.1 surround... this is not the receiver you want.
However, if you don't care about having to run a separate cable for audio or are perfectly content with 5.1 surround -- this is a nice unit. The microphone configured my speaker set-up beautifully, and breathed new life into my system.
My entire home theater is built around my gaming systems -- and the ps3 is the crown jewel. It pumps out the best video and the best audio... and it wasn't until I discovered this unit couldn't do linear 7.1 pcm because it only does pass-through audio via hdmi that I realised I had to send it back. There were also some small issues listening to SACD's over hdmi (although there is a separate multi-channel rig on the back... however it's analog and thus no cable exists for use with the ps3).
In conclusion, this is a good but limited system.
I had to return it, no audio through HDMI January 19, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
HDMI sounds like a great idea, a single cable that can support audio and video. The problems come when using devices like this one. This unit will not input audio through HDMI. It will pass audio though via HDMI, but that does not help. You must use additional audio cables with this receiver. I guess it's cheaper to build them that way. I returned this item for that one reason.
good sound, poor remote January 9, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This receiver has very good sound quality. For this alone and its various sound settings I would give this product a 5 star rating. But there are a few things you must know to make an informed purchase. First if you input an hdmi source you must output the same. The same also goes for component input and output. It would have been nice to have the ability to input any source (component, composite or s-video and have it output to hdmi. Also hdmi is pass through so if you want sound from your TV fine. Just don't expect sound to come out of the speakers attached to your receiver unless you use a digital coax, optical or component audio cables to make it happen. It's not a big deal for the sound quality you receive. The "On Screen Display" is not available in hdmi. This was a little disappointing. But my biggest disappointment was the remote. It's excellent at controlling the receiver itself but falls flat on its face controlling other units. It will not work with Samsung TVs. I called Pioneer on this and was told they do not support any Samsung TVs with this remote because they have problems with them. Of course it didn't work with my Toshiba or Sony DVD players either. I was looking forward to this unit being the control center for my AV experience, but I was wrong. As a test I went back and tried my old AV receiver remote (which is about 4 years old) and it worked right away on TV, HD dvd, DVD recorder and Xbox 360 units. Overall for the price this Pioneer unit is great for sound quality and this is of course what we're buying it for in the first place, so I will keep it and enjoy it. For the price it was one of my lowest price purchases and I think well worth the money. It would have been nice though to retire some remotes instead of having to add another to the growing collection. Maybe it's time to look at the universal to control them all.
