| Customer Reviews:
Sounds great but it runs hot! June 18, 2008 Great features for a receiver in this price point. Surround modes sound good and the HDMI switching capability is excellent.
Occasionally I have some strange video issues where the picture (regardless of source)will start jumping around the screen and the only way to fix it is to turn the receiver off and on again.
My only complaint after owning this for a few months is that it gets hot! I mean really hot, if it's been on for any length of time you can't touch the top of the receiver with your bare hands. If you have good air flow in your entertainment center then i say go with this unit, if however you have a closed off area or plan on putting other devices on top of the receiver then i would look at other options.
Good value for the money
Onyko is great, delivery was not so great. June 15, 2008 The receiver is outstanding. However, I do have some concerns about shipping. I selected the "free" shipping when I ordered the unit as I expected to be home when it came. I was called away and the order came about 4 days ahead of its expected delivery date. The delivery tracking indicated that it was delivered on a Tuesday. I got home on Thursday and it was Saturday when I got the item from a neighbor who saw it sitting on my front step. The tracking information indicated that it was picked up at the source by DLH. I did not occur to me that USPS would handle the final delivery nor did I expect that USPS would just leave the item without getting any delivery receipt. High value items like this tend to grow legs sometimes. I had some very anxious moments anyhow! Could Amazon require a delivery receipt for an additional fee paid by the customer? If not, perhaps the risks associated with "free shipping" should be available to the customer when ordering the item. Had it been stolen, would Amazon provide a replacement?
Thanks,
Ed
Love That Onkyo! June 15, 2008 My sister needed a 7.1 A/V receiver for her new home theater room and this one is perfect for her needs. She wanted to spend $300 and this was less. This is excellent quality at a budget price point, though not for a novice to set up; like her. I set it up for her. Gotta love me!
Good price - couple of sore spots June 12, 2008 Firstly, got a great price for the unit a $332 and free shipping. This unit has a couple of problems for me though: 1) there is no switched power receptacle for the sub-woofer to plug in (hence sub-woofer stays on all the time); 2) unit distorts picture from analog VCR when fast forwarding making it hard to know when you get to your spot (skipping commercials etc); 3) unit seems to delay the signal enough to create echoes when you turn on a TV to the same channel; 4) Some functions can't be done from remote (like station presetting); 5) There is no record select making it difficult if not impossible (I haven't figured it out yet) to record from one unit to another (eg: DVD to separate VCR) - my prior switch had a video select and record select in addition to selecting the input source (the record select would allow you to select an source for output to the units that can record).
Don't have an HD TV yet, so can't vouch for the HDMI upconvert logic etc.
Mute and volume buttons could be placed a little better on remote since they're used the most.
Works Perfectly, but has been replaced by New Model June 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this AV Receiver as part of a HDTV/Receiver/Speaker package, but purchased the receiver from another vendor because the silver version of the 605 was no longer available from Amazon. It now appears to me that TX-SR606 model has been released, replacing the 605.
My review is of the 605, but the feature set seems similar with one exception. Where the 605 offers 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs the 606 model offers 4.
I can see how 2 HDMI inputs might not be enough for some owners. In my situation I have a Satellite TV Box (1st input) and a Sony Playstation 3 w/Blu-Ray DVD player (2nd input). In my system the game box and the Blu-Ray DVD player are both coming over the same HDMI cable, so I only need 1 HDMI input to handle both the game and DVD player. If you have a different system you might need a 3rd HDMI input in order to have separate DVD and game box inputs into the receiver. In that case the 605 is one input short, and the 606 covers you with an additional input to spare.
Two weeks into my ownership of my 605 I finally have the receiver dialed in, and I love it. The PCM multichannel handling (Direct mode) makes a huge difference for both the game box and the Blu-Ray player. The FM tuner is plenty sensitive enough in my urban neighborhood, and receiver does not run as hot as I feared. I don't have mine in a rack enclosure, it's just sitting on the shelf with airspace above it.
The Audyssey Dynamic EQ setup is a little clunky - it seems like the phone always rings when I'm using it - but it worked and was accurate. It set up a nice tight soundfield which I only had tweak a bit to reach perfection on my 5.1 speaker system.
With four HDMI inputs on the 606 you would seem to be future-proofed better than the 605 model, but note that the 605 received a high rating from CNET, and the Playstation handles the upscaling of standard 4:3 DVDs, so the Onkyo 605's low marks from the CNET Editors for its upscaling is not a factor for Sony Playstation owners.
I paid $399 at Vann's. Note that I haven't compared the 605 with the 606 feature-for-feature, so there may be more differences. I am cross-posting this review over on the 606 product page as well.
It's larger than I envisioned, since the photo doesn't offer any scale, so if you're tight for space note the dimensions and measure your Receiver location. Leave some air space... and enjoy.
