1 out of 5 stars Onkyo TX-SR875 Overheated to failure   May 26, 2008
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

This is my third Onkyo receiver and the first one I have EVER had problems with.I did a lot a research and decided the TX-SR875 was the one above all others. I purchased it from an authorized dealer on the internet. When I set it up everything worked great . I have 4 Polk Audio speakers W/ a Polk Audio Sub. The sound was FANTASTIC, set up was very easy.
I read about the heat problem and set it where there would be no obstructions to ventillation.
I called Onkyo service about the heat, because I could not hold my hand on top of the unit, it was so hot. I was told that was normal. After two weeks the display stopped working everything else seemed okay. Then everything stopped working. I have called Onkyos' service representatives and have spent about 4 hours, over a two week period, waiting on the phone. I finally talked to a person that told me to send it to Colorado. Their only repair center in the U.S.? To ship this 60 lb. anchor will be $40.00 EACH WAY at my cost.
I can see fans on each side through the vents but they have never come on.(Factory problem?)
I am VERY disappointed with Onkyos' product and service after being a loyal user for over 20 years.

3 out of 5 stars Another problem some may experience   May 21, 2008

I received mine and got it all hooked up. Overall I like the receiver, plenty of HDMI ports for me, power, sounds good, etc. But, something was driving me crazy for the longest time and I couldn't figure it out, then one day it hit me...the audio had a fraction of a second delay over the video. It gave everything the Kung-Fu theater feeling...their lips are moving but, the sound doesn't match up!

I went into the manual and saw a delay option. Unfortunately, it was already set to 0. Called Onkyo, they said to send it to the nearest service center as this was a known problem and easy fix. They gave me the service center contact info. I called the service center just to get an estimate on how long I should expect my receiver to be gone. They had no idea they were a certified Onkyo service center and didnt' seem to have a clue what I was talking about when I explained my problem.

So, haven't sent my receiver in just yet...I'm a bit scared to do so now.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Choice   May 11, 2008

After conducting an incredible amount of research on AV Receivers, I became confused. In the end, in the $1,500 price range, it came down to the Yamaha RX-V1800 and the Onkyo TX-SR875. I almost went with the Yamaha, because of all of the reviews about the Onkyo running so "hot". This receiver, like most receivers, does run warm, but not as hot as those reviews would lead you to believe.

This is an AWESOME receiver. The owner's manual is very user friendly, and the receiver was extremely easy to setup. And I cannot imagine a better qualtiy receiver in this price range. My Definitive speakers have never sounded better. (I previously owned the Denon 3806 receiver, but it was so complicated that I sold it on Ebay)

I cannot say enough positive and good things about the Onkyo TX-SR875 AV Receiver. And, oh yes, I found it on Ebay for $1,000, including shipping.

1 out of 5 stars Failed in <4 Months Light Usage   April 18, 2008
5 out of 8 found this review helpful

My Onkyo SR875 receiver failed after less than four months light usage. The unit's LED screen went dark abruptly and careful trouble-shooting did not revive it.

I researched the issue on the web and found least five other owners reporting the same failure; the most recent one (March 2008) stated a replacement for the offending part is not available in the Onkyo repair system.

Contacted Onkyo-US customer service. Was told to ship the broken SR875 to a service center. Unfortunately, that means a lengthy period without a receiver, plus the inconvenience of boxing and hauling the heavy unit to UPS.

Potential buyers should digest Amazon customer reviews involving many failures by this and other models of Onkyo receiver. Be forewarned that Onkyo product quality should not be taken for granted.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding product   April 7, 2008

I have used this product for a month now.

Pros:
1. Very easy to setup
2. Outstanding clear sound
3. Maximum number of HDMI inputs for the price range
4. Video upgrading to 1080p ; not just pass through. Thus if you have this unit, all videos are upgraded including analog Video to near HD quality (using the cvetted Faroudja Chip)
5. Easy switching of inputs and adjustment of audio and video automatically.
6. THX capability not found in any other unit in the same price range. Includes Neural 7.1 THX audio
8. Elegant and robust design adds to the decor
9. AMAZON's price was the best, especially when you add free shipping of this very heavy item!!

Cons:
1. Operating manual is useless
2. Very heavy

Myths:

DONOT be confused by the report of fire and heat etc. Yes, this unit does get hot, but nothing like what is being reported by other users. This is not a DVD player or CD player. It will get warm especially when operated for hours at a time. PLEASE don't pay attention to the report of fire - that ust have been a faulty connection or unsecure connection made by the operator.

After reviewing the heat related issues I decided to buy the silver unit which should not get as musch hot as the black one would; also this was about sixty dollars cheaper.

OVERALL: I am very pleased and I strongly recommend this model.
