Outstanding product April 7, 2008 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have used this product for a month now.
Pros: 1. Very easy to setup 2. Outstanding clear sound 3. Maximum number of HDMI inputs for the price range 4. Video upgrading to 1080p ; not just pass through. Thus if you have this unit, all videos are upgraded including analog Video to near HD quality (using the cvetted Faroudja Chip) 5. Easy switching of inputs and adjustment of audio and video automatically. 6. THX capability not found in any other unit in the same price range. Includes Neural 7.1 THX audio 8. Elegant and robust design adds to the decor 9. AMAZON's price was the best, especially when you add free shipping of this very heavy item!! Cons: 1. Operating manual is useless 2. Very heavy
Myths:
DONOT be confused by the report of fire and heat etc. Yes, this unit does get hot, but nothing like what is being reported by other users. This is not a DVD player or CD player. It will get warm especially when operated for hours at a time. PLEASE don't pay attention to the report of fire - that ust have been a faulty connection or unsecure connection made by the operator.
After reviewing the heat related issues I decided to buy the silver unit which should not get as musch hot as the black one would; also this was about sixty dollars cheaper.
OVERALL: I am very pleased and I strongly recommend this model.
Does NOT overheat, Reon & sound is great! March 22, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased the 875 for the high def component switching that my 801 couldn't accomplish. The Reon processor is great, once I figured out how to get to the menu and adjust the edge enhancement. Naturally, the receiver also puts out terrific sound. I haven't had any overheating problems whatsoever. The 875 is not running any hotter than my old 801.
careful: will not display dvi or hdmi from computers and downsample 1080p component to 720p for hdmi output March 18, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
The unit has plenty of good points as others have pointed out. I'd like to point out flaws that may matter to you: - if you use a computer with a DVI to HDMI cable, or an HDMI video card, the SR875 is not able to display the picture properly (it will be blocky and with the wrong color). There is no known fix from onkyo except plugging the cable in your TV if you have more than one HDMI input in your TV - as others have noted, the unit gets very hot. It has no active cooling and will burn up in a cabinet (it has also damaged equipment that people have put directly on top of it) - there is some problem with 1080p component video, at least for Xboxes, and the unit will convert component 1080p down to 720p and then back up to 1080p hdmi (losing quality in the process). This makes the 875 barely better than the Denon 3808 which cannot display component on its hdmi output
If the first 2 points are a problem, it is recommended that you look at the Denon 3808 which doesn't have the video problem with dvi/hdmi, and also adds ethernet, internet radio, firmware upgrades over the net, controls over a web browser, and usb reading for music.
Onkyo Reciever March 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is my second Onkyo Receiver, the first being the 801. That was a great receiver, great sound, but hard to program and was missing the HDMI connections. The SR875 has 4 HDMI imputs and sounds great. Connecting my DVD, Playstation 3, Cable box, and DVD Recorder was a breeze and much easier to program. I highly recommend this receiver.
Great AVR March 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this receiver for about 2 weeks now. It set up quite easily using Audyssey and the included microphone for sound; connections were easy to use and assign; video upscaling was simple as well. The receiver does run rather warm (45 degrees C according to the receiver), though I've added case fans to the top of the receiver. It no longer runs warm (25 degrees C).
The video's great, the sound's great (especially with Blu-ray and HD DVD with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master). I've had no problems beyond the temperature to this point.
