Sony 7.1 - Better than average September 18, 2008 very capable, quality receiver for a good value price. 3 HDMI inputs to the one output is a solid ratio for the average household. If you have more than HD satellite, HD DVD (blue ray?), and HD camera, then you are in a different league. This receiver will serve 99% of American households' needs.
Great technology August 29, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The audio codecs are ahead of the mainstream technology that is out there. Blu-Ray will eventually take advantage of all of this tech, but having this piece of equipment gives you a head start and will not become obsolete anytime soon. Sure, you can probably find "better" sounding equipment, or some think just because they paid a lot more, but I have had the same Sony DD/DTS 5.1 receiver for 8 years before I purchased this receiver. I am completely pleased with this product and Sony has always produced great electronics. I see no reason spending $500 or more for something that his Sony can do for much less.
Look out for COX Cable August 26, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I got the receiver a week or so ago and it is great, especially considering the price. It sounds great and most setup is automatic. It works great with PS3/HDMI. HDMI is required for the PS3 to output more than 2 audio channels from a Blu-Ray Disk (Standard DVDs on the PS3 reproduce Dolby 5.1 just fine.)
HOWEVER, beware of COX cable if you want to use HDMI from the cable box. You will get an error on your TV about it not supporting HDCP, which is a copy protection scheme. Cox (Scientific Atlanta) DVR boxes see any HDMI switching receiver as some sort of pirating device and requires you to use component cables. This is a major inconvenience! The result is that you can't switch from the COX box to the PS3 without changing inputs on your TV.
A call to COX customer "care" revealed that they don't care to remove HDCP from their cable boxes even though I suspect it would be a simple ROM upgrade.
Great HDMI Reciver for the price August 19, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As being one that was looking for a receiver that would give me the HDMI sound it is hard to find a spec on a system that will tell you if it does or not. Well look no further. This system WILL play the lossless audio via HDMI. Now you must know that this reciever DOES NOT decode the HIDEF audio such as True HD or PCM. I have mine hooked up to the PS3 witch DOES the encoding of all HIDEF audio. If you dont have a blu-ray player or DVD player that does not decode the HIDEF audio and thats what you want then this is not the receiver for you. But if you have it then this is a great deal. I bought the 5.1 Yamaha speakers and it is absolutely great. If you do have the PS3 i had to change audio on the PS3 to Linear PCM in the sound settings. You have to do this so that the player decodes the audio and not the receiver. I watched Twister on Blu-Ray and it BLEW my mind on what you miss with just dolby 5.1. This is a great entry level system with great sound like the big boys."
Sony STRDG720 7.1 Audio Video Receiver August 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had many receivers in the past (15 yrs) to drive my Bose Acoustamass speakers (6). Never could get it set up properly and I was never satisfied with the sound. This unit has its own mic and sets up easily. The sound is great. The monster cable I purchased for around $3.00 connects to the TV and I have HD like I had never seen before on my Sony 50" rear projection TV. I recommend this unit highly.
