4 out of 5 stars Good sound/video. Bad remote control.   March 8, 2008

I've been using this receiver for about a week now. The auto-setup was great! The auto-setup even noticed that I accidentally reversed the wires for one of my speakers. I haven't seen this very helpful feature in other receivers.

It has the video and audio performance that you would expect for this price range.

I have one complaint about this receiver. When using the remote control, you need one button to turn it on, and it requires a different button to turn it off. Tech support said that was how the buttons are suppose to work. This is an issue if you ever plan to use it with good universal remote control. The provided remote control is hard to navigate in the dark when you may be navigating the remote control by touch in the dark. At the moment, my universal remote control can only power it off, and I have to manually turn it on.

4 out of 5 stars Great Receiver for the Price   December 19, 2007

I bought the RXV661 Receiver from Best Buy on Sale for $395 which provided an extra $100 for speakers. I sound tested the unit at a Best Buy and it blew away the Sony's priced in a similar price range. The bass on the unit isn't as strong as I expected buy I only have it turned up half way. Other than that the JBL speakers and this receiver combination brought to life Football games and Fight Club. The receiver has a few quick switch buttons on the remote to go from my PS3 to my Cable Box. It was very easy to setup as for as detecting the appropriate audio input for the desired source. The sound fields are ok although a bit difficult to figure out how they change the sound and I've found the straight mode with very little equalization from the source works the best for TV shows.

THe biggest negative is that the setup returns warnings of the Left Right front speakers having reversed polarity even though they were perfect. Also it essentially took me 4 hours to setup and get everything working and I'm keeping the manual on my coffee table for a while.

5 out of 5 stars I really like this receiver for what it does and what it does NOT do...   November 10, 2007

I picked up this receiver as part of my recent HT upgrade. Samsung HP-T5084 plasma
television, Ascend 340SE speakers, Infinity Subwoofer, Oppo 980H DVD player. The
Yamaha RX-V661 receiver balances perfectly with all of my components. Sound is
wonderful, the unit is easy to use and set up (the YPAO works superb). For the money
I paid I am very pleased with it's performance. I am also pleased with what it DOES
NOT DO. This unit passes HDMI video AS IS. I did not want any processing of the
signal from my DVD player. The picture on my 5084 looks exactly the same whether
I run DVD through the 661 or if I run it direct to the plasma. Sweet !! dxr

5 out of 5 stars The name says it all - Yamaha!!   November 4, 2007

I too had fantasized about owning a system of high calibre, and this one fits the bill. I enjoy my ipod, and now can use through my system! HDMI is fantastic, so easy to set up!! It's also convenient for using XM radio. But the proof is in the pudding, and it's the quality sound that everyone will appreciate, as well as the ease of use!! Thanks Yamaha!!

2 out of 5 stars Shady seller   October 10, 2007

Immediately after ordering this product via Amazon, I became suspicious that the product was not "new" as represented. I contacted the seller and asked if this was new stock, and not "B stock". I was assured the product was brand new and was not "B stock".

The receiver arrived. There was no bill of sale (so how to return easily?) and the Yamaha warranty card included clearly states "B Stock" and a restricted warranty applies. In addition, there is a sticker on the rear of the receiver clearly stating "B Stock".

The seller misrepresented the product. I am not happy and advise readers to avoid this seller.
