5 out of 5 stars Awesome bargain, with unexpected caveats   May 18, 2008

With the Onkyo 606 hitting the market recently, this receiver can be found here and elsewhere at or south of $300 - and at that price, this receiver is peerless. I'm very happy to have this and will get many years of joyous use, I'm sure. There are three things I think you all should know, however: br / br /1 - This volume knob is a let-down br /A cheap plastic volume knob on a $600/list receiver? For shame, Onkyo. This is annoying because the limp insensitive knob is in no way a reflection of the muscular sound the receiver pumps out. I want a nice piece of motorized metal, consarn it! br / br /2 - Audyssey is nigh useless br /I think this might work wonders with cheap speakers, but with a Polk RTi series 5.1 set-up it buried the highs and made everything sound underwater-ish. It did a great job guessing distances, but I turned it off after 30 seconds and haven't looked back. br / br /3 - The heat br /I don't think this runs MUCH hotter than other AV equipment, but it does run hot. I'm being cruel and unusual to it and have given it less than an inch of ventilation above; no problems. I might've heard popping but it's nothing big. I think some people are being big babies or expecting a $600 receiver that's a great bargain to sound like a $3,000 receiver. This is more receiver than any of us need, but it will get hot. I'm going to give it more room to breathe to hopefully extend its life, but it's not impossible to cram this somewhere and forget it. br / br /CONCLUSION: br /At these prices there is no better receiver to be found. GET THIS NOW! Amazon is the best e-tailer around and can be trusted to stand by what they sell and how they ship it.

5 out of 5 stars The receiver that saved the day!   May 17, 2008

At least for me it did. I bought this to replace my old receiver which for some reason decided one day that it would only play from whatever speakers it felt like. So it wasn't an uncommon thing for me to have full surround sound one minute and all of a sudden lose four out of the six speakers. But I digress. br / br /This is a fantastic piece of equipment. I don't know enough about home theater receivers to write a very detailed review on all of the features and what it can and can't do but I knew taking it out of the box that it was classy and well designed. After yanking out the old receiver and replacing all the connections on the new one (which was not difficult at all; the connections are all labeled appropriately and the only difficulty I had was maneuvering around the back of my way-too-heavy-to-move entertainment center), I ran the speaker test with the supplied microphone and was able to set this thing up in a matter of minutes. br / br /It sounds way better than my old receiver, recognizes just about all of the latest sound mixes available (Dolby True HD, DTS HD, etc.) and has enough options on it to calibrate the system to your exact needs. If there's one thing I can say about the system, it's definitely one that greatly requires you to fully read the manual to get accustomed to it. I've never had to do that before but the manual is clear enough that I was able to get the gist of how it operates fairly quickly. You can connect just about anything to it except for your kid's Eazy Bake oven but hey, you can't have it all, right? HDMI switching, optical and coaxial outputs... enough to satisfy anyone but the most hardened audiophile I would say and even then, who wouldn't be happy with the amount of stuff that you get here? br / br /I'm running on a 5.1 setup and it sounds great. I don't know if I'll ever get around to adding the extra two speakers for full 7.1 but it's good to know that I have the option if I so choose. br / br /I recommend this receiver whole heartedly and I'm glad that I went with Onkyo this time around. I'd recommend you read some of the other reviews posted up here as well on this product as you will get more of a detailed breakdown but coming from me at the most simplest level of recommendations, I won't hesitate to say this is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product   May 16, 2008

I received this product the next day using the free shipping option. Package was solid good padding comes in original box. Took me about 15 minutes to setup. I am using all HDMI so the setup is real clean. I needed to read the instructions for how to set the HDMI but that is about it. br / br /It comes with a mic for automatic configuration. I have not done this yet because I need to connect my center in-wall speaker. Using all polk audio speakers and it sounds awesome. For 318.99 silver you can't go wrong. Save money and get the silver... its in a closet anyway. Overall I love this product, its sounds clean and is easy to use. The remote does a fine job. br / br /The reason why this product is discounted so heavily is because they just came out with the tx-sr606 which has 4 hdmi in and 1 out compared to 2 hdmi in and 1 out. Thats all the difference there is and $200 more. Ha. You can buy a hdmi switch for the difference.

5 out of 5 stars Great receiver but be careful if you buy it here   May 14, 2008

This is a great receiver. I picked it up first from [...] then sent it back for a refund and bought it from circuit city instead. More on that later. In a nutshell this is a great product. I recently just finished buying a set of polk and boston acoustic speakers to set up my 5.1 theater system. Setting up this receiver was rather painless. The user interface was intuitive and very user-friendly. Instructions were extremely detailed and the microphone helped immensely with speaker calibration. I do understand that some of the 605's have had trouble with popping noises and running really hot. Onkyo mentioned in their product manual that some of the older 605's may have problems because of a needed firmware update for dolby digital playback. The newer models don't seem to have this problem. So far my receiver plays great with no popping. It can get warm at times but if you make sure it has good circulation it shouldn't be a problem either. The remote is also very handy and works well with most brands of tvs and dvd players. It didn't work with att's new uverse cable box but it is compatible with numerous cable and satellite service provider boxes including direct tv. Now for the sad news. If you buy this from amazon.com make sure you really want it from them. It clearly states on onkyo's web site that onkyo will not honor any warranty service whether it be limited or extended if you purchase your receiver from an unauthorized dealer. The list of authorized dealers are on the web site and amazon is NOT an authorized dealer. Even the warranty with NEW that sometimes will show on this product page will not be honored since NEW's warranty policy states that they will not honor warranty service on a product that does not orginally have a manufacturer's warranty. So that is the heads up guys. You will save money buying it from amazon.com but it will come to you without a warranty, manufacturer's or extended. br / br /[...]

4 out of 5 stars Good solid performer   May 8, 2008

Movies and sports sound great - setup a bit of a pain but just a one time thing - using universal remote to handle control. Would recommend to friends - HDMI handles both video and audio.
