everything sony March 15, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
it's good, real good. you'll need a little computer, audio & video knowledge to get it's full use and functions. by no means the alpha & omega, but a stepping stone getting there.
Good AV Receiver, Poor Operating Instructions March 12, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm pleased with the performance of the receiver but very frustrated with the Operating Instructions. The font in the 5x8 book is smaller than most Bibles, some of the illustrations are not legible, and the instructions, at best, are murky. Check out the PDF version on Sony's website. In fact, I came pretty close to returning the receiver because I was so disappointed that Sony would manufacture a pretty good receiver and then skimp on the user guide. On the other hand, the Operating Instructions that came with the Panasonic Plasma TV that I recently purchased is excellent. Maybe Sony should have Panasonic design and print their Operating Instructions.
Value for the Money March 6, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I just upgraded to Blu-Ray and soon discovered that I couldn't play the latest & greatest audio with my former amp. In fact, with Ice Age Meltdown I could not get multichannel in English with my setup.
There are many players out there that can handle the cutting edge sound but most cost hundreds more than this model. If you have a huge room and require more power, then you might want to look elsewhere. However, this one works great for me.
I agree with the comment that this is not a plug'n play. I used the included mic to perform the Auto Calibration of my speakers. I then had to go into manual setup for speakers and tweak the settings so I could hear the dialogue via the center speaker. I also increased the level for the surround speakers.
The GUI interface is great. However, I couldn't figure out how to exit GUI mode until I visited the Sony website. The manual didn't mention that you have to press Shift/Menu to get back to menu mode so that the buttons on the front of the amp can be utilized.
Sony gives you the option of various sound "enhancements" but I prefer the A.F.D. mode that allows you to hear the sound that was recorded.
I agree with all the posts that give it thumbs up for sound and visual performance. It gets me to where I need to be until the next technology renders it obsolete, hopefully not for 10 years or so.
Power Rating Misleading March 2, 2008 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
This Sony STRDG1100 is not rated correctly. There are contradictions in the literature. Initially Sony states that the amplifier is rated at 100 watts per channel for a total of 700 watts. However, the technical specifications in the back of the manual state the power supply is only rated at 350 watts. In all other respects this receiver is good but not great.
Still a SONY Fan! This A/V unit Rocks! February 22, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This unit replaces my old Sony 5.1 STR-710 it was used to upgrade from 5.1 to 7.1 and hook to my new 60" Sony DLP flat screen. I use both old school and new school equipment so it was improtant that this unit would accept my current equipment and be able to expand into the future. I can say that it took an afternoon of playing with the unit to get it hooked up but WOW what a great unit. SONY ROCKS!
If you want to check out the upscale feature plop in a VCR tape (ya I know) that is run through RBG and digital sound! The grand kids were blown away with the picture. I have 150 watt old school Fisher front speakers with 12" woofers and this thing drives them clean and crisp, not to mention the 200watt sub and 100watt surrounds. The decoding on the 7.1 is awsome and this was a good fit for my movie room. The programming is easy with the menu and the Brava system works so easy my wife can use it, truly one button function. (she is electronically challenged) The auto calibration gets you close and the fine tuning is very easy. The Auto functions are neat and clean when changing from souces like HDMI to digital input.
Now for the bad, sorry but this will be a short paragraph. The only issue after three weeks is I still do not know how to switch the seating position (1,2, or 3) or change the 5 pre-set EQ settings. That's it!
