Really pleased with this product, but the HDMI output (the only key port in a box with hyper-redundancy) broke in the first week. Will write another review when I get a replacement.

I own a very current serial number of this product. It has the performance and features of a high end product but the display is very small and crowded and the info is not helpfully displayed like a Denon or Yamaha. The full info is very well displayed in the GUI interface but that is only when you view the info on your TV. The features and capabilities are just amazing. I just wished it had a full display like most receivers in this price range. The remote is only partially lit - for a few more cents a fully lit remote would have been nice. They just left out little things! It just does almost everything very well! I gave it 5* because of this. A other $200 for a first class display and it would have been perfect.
Since mine is a late serial # - absolutely no problems with HDMI at all. Every HDMI device worked perfect from the first connection. I am happy because I did not want to spend $5000.

We had our new home built and wired for surround sound in the main viewing area. Our second zone is set up in the kitchen where we can have breakfast while hearing the morning newscast.
It took me a while to figure out how to get the zone 2 (kitchen speakers) to work, other than as additional rear speakers, supporting surround sound.
On the remote, I had to push the 2CH/A.Direct button so that both zones and all seven speakers broadcast the television.
Trouble is, that I could not figure out how to get the system back into the surround sound mode. Frustrating . . . but eventually, I discovered the proper selection on the unit and the surround was restored.
The reviews said that the Sony is easy to operate. For me, it's complicated.
I still give it the highest rating possible. I have a cable DVR unit and a BluRay hooked up. The radio works beautifully. The AM comes in loud and clear and I have an FM antenna installed in the attic to help bring in the signal.
My TV is the Samsung 4671. Watching football is fantastic. And for NASCAR fans, when they give the "crank it up" signal, boost the volume to about 90 and hold your seat. You're as good as in the pit.

When I went with cable HD, I bought all new Sony Bravia equipment using all HDMI.
I encountered a number of issues that drive me nuts.
To change the sound mode, you have to get up to press a button on the receiver because when you're in the GUI, the video and audio no longer function! Of course, since you're not next to where you're listening, you actually need two people. One person to press the button, the other person at the listening position to determine if the sound mode change helped or degraded the sound. Hopefully, the two of you will agree on what sounds best. What was Sony thinking?
The receiver makes a loud clanking noise when it's powered down. I jump a bit each time I turn it off thinking that something is broken.
Some of the controls on the remote and the menus are so counter-intuitive it can drive you nuts.
Following the instructions (page 127), I couldn't figure out how to get the remote to learn buttons from other devices. I never had a problem with any of my previous remotes. Ultimately, I bought a URC remote and did the programming myself.
Why does the Sony Bravia HDTV remote buttons light up but not the Bravia receiver remote. You'd think that at $1400, they could have thrown that feature in. For me, it's a moot issue since I bought a programmable universal remote with a LCD screen I won't have to deal with the agony of Sony remotes.
Believe it or not, I can't figure out how to turn on the power from the remote. I feel so retarded. Please, don't tell me how to do it. If one needs instructions on how to turn on a device from a remote, then you know there's something wrong with the way it's designed. I programmed in the power-on IR code into the URC (universal remote) to resolve that problem.
One would think that the Sony Bravia receiver would communicate better with the Sony Bravia HDTV. You can rename the HDMI connections on the receiver to something meaningful (Blu-Ray, Cable, etc.), but the TV doesn't recognize the labels; it still displays HDMI-1, HDMI-2, etc.
One would also think that raising the volume on the receiver would display something on the TV; they are all Sony Bravia products and I would think that the devices could communicate with each other. It would have been nice to see the receiver settings displayed on the TV too. It's almost impossible to see the receiver display from across the room. At least the Sony Bravia Blu-Ray player does communicate with the Sony Bravia HDTV so it was a snap to setup.
Each time I want to use the GUI, I have to press Amp, Shift, Menu. Yes, the GUI is displayed on the receiver but pressing the Menu button doesn't do anything unless I press those 3 buttons each and every time. I'll have to program that key sequence into the remote control.
My Sennheiser HD 650 headphones don't work properly on this unit. I get sound on only one cup and nothing at all with the extension cord. No more watching TV at night. Maybe later I'll send it for repairs.
It's heavy. Really, really heavy. If the receiver is not in a convenient position, you'll really notice just how heavy it is to move.
It's great for warming up the room in the winter since it gives off so much heat.
If you're a tweaker, you'll love this unit. It has dozens of ways of configuring your system. If you're looking for a plug-n-play unit and not willing to pay for competent professional installation, this is not for you. The manual is 148 pages and the instructions are not the best.
That said, here are the nice things about this unit:
The speaker set up is terrific and easy. You use a stereo microphone (provided in the box) at your listening position and it will automatically set up your speakers. It even told me that I had set my speaker wires reversed (but it didn't tell me which set of speakers). Except for the subwoofer, it told me quite precisely the distance each speaker was from the microphone.
I thought my speakers were degrading from age and I was prepared to buy a new set, but no need. This receiver blasts out sound, loud and clear. From outside the TV room, it sounds like there's a full blown HD movie theater in the house; better sound than the local non-HD theaters.
The receiver has a built-in equalizer but if I made any changes, I'd just muck up the sound.
I don't know if it's this receiver and/or the TV but the audio and video quality using $4 HDMI cables are terrific.

Sony again makes truly a terrific product. The thing weighs a lot however it is a very high quality product. Sony alwalys gets a premium for products, however it pays you back over time. Exellent hub for todays audio, video systems.
