great picture and audio December 2, 2009 EER The BDP-23FD seems comparable? NOT! it is in that it plays blu-ray. I have had this player for a long time and I can tell you it's a bit slow to me, but I have had it for a long time and after all the firmware updates over the months it is faster and very reliable. When it first came out, there were issues, but now it plays everything without a problem. Every place I look at reviews they say how incredible the video is. I agree the video is amazing and I would buy another pioneer once they have a universal player because not only are they great blu-ray players, but they look really good too. This one has a touch sensitive interface on the component and you can just barley touch it and it works. It is so cool. I have called pioneer on the weekends and there was always someone there to work with me when I fist bought it. As I said there were many firmware issues and I had a problem they didn't know about. Once the firmware update came out everything worked great. I can't remember the last time I had to update it. I gave it 4 stars because I still think it's a bit slow, but hey the video is awesome!
Best bluray player you can get for Video/Audio quality! October 25, 2009 Alex B (Canada) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I posted this review for Oppo, which I repeat here as I first bought Oppo but then after these tests moved to this Elite and I can't be happier!
Ok, so I got carried away like all others with Oppo features, and fan-boy reviews... ordered one and started using it.
Since I am a bit of a Hifi guy, I asked my buddy to bring his blu-ray to do a back to back comparison to a Pioneer Elite BDP-05, connected to an Elite Plasma Kurp 9G, and here's what we found:
Speed: Oppo is fast! In most cases it was 25% or more faster than Pioneer. So, Oppo: +1
Blu-ray Video: Pioneer Bluray picture quality was MUCH BETTER with similar setting at 1080P! I was quite disappointed to see that! Pio +1
DVD: Oppo looked a bit better in DVD upscaling at 1080p, however the best upscaling was the Plasma TV at 480i! So, if you got a Pioneer Elite Plasma both are equal, if not Opp +2.
Audio: Pioneer analog out is just GREAT! Much more clarity and definition as it has great DAC. Pio: +2
Build Quality: Pioneer BY A MILE, I mean it looks, feels, and operates as a more expensive unit. Oppo just looks and feels cheap and doesn't look the price it costs! Pio +3
Remote/User Interface: Again Pioneer wins hands down! Pio +4
Total Score:
Pio +4 - Opp +2
So, overall, I was quite disappointed in Oppo (maybe expected too much) at $500, returned it and bought the BDP-05FD on sale for the same price. If you care ONLY for speed of disk loading and operation, and do not have a higher end LCD/Plasmas for upscaling get Oppo, if you care about bluray video quality/audio quality/build quality, then get the Pioneer.
Fantastic player May 1, 2009 C. Peralta (Tucson,Az) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
