Amazon.com Saved from the brink of cancellation by its loyal fanbase, Star Trek's third and final season rewarded them with a number of memorable episodes. Tight budgets and slipping creative control, however, made it the series' most uneven season, though it did have some of the coolest episode titles ("For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky," "Is There in Truth No Beauty," "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"). Some of the best moments involved a gunfight at the OK Corral ("Spectre of the Gun"), a knock-down drag-out sword battle with the Klingons aboard the Enterprise ("Day of the Dove"), the ship getting caught in an ever-tightening spacial net ("The Tholian Web"), TV's first interracial kiss ("Plato's Stepchildren," and it should be easy to guess who participated), Sulu taking command ("The Savage Curtain"), and Kirk's switching bodies with an ex-love interest ("Turnabout Intruder"). The 2008 DVD set benefits from the same remastering given to the other two seasons, though only the first was released in high definition (the now-defunct HD DVD format). Still, the episodes are substantially cleaned up to the point where they look quite good, rather than jarringly fuzzy to the modern viewer. And there are some new visual effects that are well-done, and obtrusive only to the strictest fans. Compare, for example, the dramatic close-up of the green-glowing U.S.S. Defiant in "The Tholian Web" with the original effect, which had the ship floating in a green haze. New bonus features are 11 more minutes of rare footage from extra Billy Blackburn; "Collectible Trek," a 14-minute discussion of rare Trek items, filmed in 2004 with the rest of the bonus content but not included on the previous DVD set; and the newly filmed "Captain's Log: Bob Justman," an affectionate nine-minute tribute to the series producer. Otherwise, the set retains almost all the special features from the 2004 set, including the features on Walter Koenig, George Takei, and James Doohan (who died the following year), plus the two versions of the series pilot, "The Cage," a restored color version and the original, never-aired version that alternates between color and black and white. Starring Jeffery Hunter as Captain Pike, Leonard Nimoy as a relatively emotional Spock, and Majel Barrett (the future Nurse Chapel and Mrs. Gene Roddenberry) as a frosty Number One, this pilot was rejected, but a second was commissioned, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," now considered the "official" beginning of the series. But "The Cage" is very recognizably Star Trek with its far-out concepts (telepathic aliens collecting species samples), sexy humanoid women, character development, and of course cheesy costumes and special effects. Footage was later reused in the season 1 two-parter, "The Menagerie." --David Horiuchi

Both versions for one low price! March 19, 2010 Anders Blom I have wanted to own all the episodes of the original series of Star Trek for quite some time. I noticed that the prices for the dvd releases of this series are ridiculously expensive at or about $100 per season. I found that I was also torn between which version to get, either the original production or the new re-mastered "Lucasfied" version. I then came across this product right here on Amazon in Blu-ray for a fraction of the cost. I quickly realized that with the purchase of a Blu-ray drive (LITE-ON iHOS104) I could finally start a blu-ray collection and begin it with the entire collection of Star Trek the original series (BOTH VERSIONS!!!) for less money then what the dvd sets would cost. A NO BRAINER!
In Full HD, the video is astonishing; the color, blacks and detail of these episodes makes this set on blu-ray a must own for any fan. Every episode can be watched with its original special effects or the newly redone (Lucasfied) version. Each version is re-mastered with amazing visual clarity and quality.
The ONLY downfall is the audio, I am no expert but it seems that the studio cut some serious corners in this aspect. The volume levels for the 8 channel audio are unbalanced. Voices seem to come only from the left front while effects come from the right and the score comes from the center... to correct this one must tweak the control panel for their system or simply place the audio to the optional original broadcast mono. I have settled for the mono as this is still a phenomenal audio presentation.

Star Trek season 3 March 8, 2010 L. K. Helton Arrived promptly in great condition. Just what I needed for a gift for a Star Trek junkie
Good Season of Trek. Great Blu ray deal! March 4, 2010 Matthew Vincent This is considered the worst season of TOS but the first two seasons were outstanding so its unfair to compare it to them. It is still better than most of what is out there on TV today. This looks incredible on Blu ray. Don't knock this season until you see it. But I definitely recommend it to Trek fans. Finish your collection cause I KNOW you already have seasons 1 & 2.
Climax and Falling Action.... February 17, 2010 J. C. Holcom (Tampa, FL) While the Original Series hit its peak in the Second Season, that's not to say there isn't anything to enjoy in Season Three. Sure, Shatner's Rug looks terrible. Sure, the tunics aren't velour anymore. Sure, as a whole, the writing isn't what it once was, but we still get gem's like 'Spectre of the Gun' and 'The Empath'. We're introduced to Michael Ansara's Kang and a new hairstyle for Jimmy Doohan. Any real Trek fan who makes the active choice to buy the Original Series on Blu-Ray ain't gonna give a rat's ass ('tribble's ass' just wasn't worth it) about Season Three's short-comings. It becomes an obsessive/compulsive necessity to round out your collection.
