Thermal Leak Detector Review March 13, 2010 Donald D. Sien I picked this brand of detector because it is a trusted name of Black & Decker. This thermal detector is easy to use and you scan an area of the room, looking for for cold air entering a room through electrical outlets, doors and windows. The temperature reading changes as you scan an area and is aided by a laser light which is project on the wall as you scan. This beam changes from a nominal temperature represented by a green color to blue as the area gets colder, or to red as the area becomes warmer. The sensitivity of this color change can be varied with a slide switch on the front panel of the detector. This can be a vary useful tool around the house.
Oh My gaud! March 4, 2010 R. McPeak (Humboldt, IA, US) Easy to read, works easily but the hard part is then determining where the air leak is coming from. For the money good investment if you use to correct the problems. Of course there are a lot of free things you can do to detect air leaks or therma leaks, using incense to see if the smoke is affect, but this seems to work well and is easy to use. Now if it was compined with Xray to see into wall this would be a Great! product.
Poor man's thermal imager March 4, 2010 E. K. Dawson Really great tool
I used this for 10 minutes and found 3 leaks that needed foam...Does what it says
Great Gadget March 3, 2010 Dominick Cassano (USA) This is a great little gadget. I have identified and corrected the areas of heat loss around the home. Under the window moldings and around the attic access and around the boiler etc. I see a reduction in the oil usage and the house is warmer.
Black and Decker Thermo Reader March 1, 2010 James Chan (New York) Very easy to use and definitley helps identify cold spots/ leaks. I'm not sure about the negative reviews about accuracy, but the unit is measuring the difference between one surface area to another, so as along as you start with a room temperature surface you will be good. Just point and shoot, the unit really helped with doors, windows, drafts around piping and recessed lighting fixtures. I also used it to determine behind which wall needed insulation.
