3 out of 5 stars Promising receiver with issues   March 3, 2010

When you compare specification amongst receivers, this Onkyo model is unrivaled. Its not an inexpensive receiver by any means, however, if used properly, it can server as the central hub to your entertainment.

When I first received the receiver, I was shocked at how heavy it is. Make sure you have a sturdy entertainment stand/rack for this receiver. Being an I.T. guy by trade, I dove into the manual and all of the features. When attempting a firmware upgrade, I encountered some serious problems. A call was placed to Onkyo support and the tech was able to get me up and running.

The unit drives my five martin logan speakers cleanly however the volume is typically around 65 out of 95 for normal listening. My biggest reason for purchasing this receiver is that I believe it is one of the most future proof receivers on the market. Upgradeable firmware, 9.2 channel, multi zone, internet radio, Windows 7 compatible and it talks to your home network. Having 8 HDMI inputs etc!

Now for the issues. I thought I had a little technical glitch that Onkyo support was able to correct. It turns out its just a bandaid. Whenever the receiver loses power, it won't come back properly. You have to hard reset it to factory defaults. What this means is that ALL of your settings (speaker, presets, sound etc) will need to be redone.

If you sift through the reviews, this appears to be a common issue although the cause is not known. You are looking at atleast an hour to reset all of your settings! Hopefully they fix this in a future firmware update. Speaking of which, there are countless reviews from people and professional A/V reviewers/testers that have bricked their units when performing a firmware update. The manual states to only do a firmware update if asked, tech support will tell you that you can do it whenever you want.

At one point while troubleshooting with the Onkyo tech, he told me that the unit would have to be replaced. I asked how I go about doing this, his reply was call whoever you bought it from and tell them John from tech support said the machine needs to be replaced. Most vendors are weary about returns let alone replacing a $2000 receiver. I didn't like the fact that Onkyo doesn't take it upon themselves to make things right.

At the end of the day, this is a good value but be prepared to deal with some frustration.
