Really impressive February 5, 2010 Big Bertha (UK) I was looking for a standalone system to replace my aging 'all in one' DVD home cinema and I wanted something that was compact, powerful, with plenty of connections and didn't require me having wires trailing across the room. I spent a lot of time reading reviews and various AV forums and this neat Onkyo system with built-in Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoders seemed to tick all the boxes. The only concern I had was the 'buzzing' that a lot of reviewers have mentioned.
It comes with a combined receiver subwoofer and two satellite front speakers. The connection ports are on the rear of the subwoofer and there's 2X HDMI in, HDMI out, 2X Digital Optical in, 1X Digital Coaxial in, 2X Analogue Audio in and additional speakers connection ports should you wish to upgrade to 5.1 or 7.1 at a later date.
It looks great, really is neat and compact and considering it's a 2.1 system it really packs a punch. The bass from the sub is deep and really powerful and the satellites are clear with a lovely tone. As yet no 'buzz' has materialised.
Initially I set up the system using the included Audyssey 2EQ room calibration microphone and despite following the instructions step by step, was really disappointed with the sound quality produced by the system with hardly any sound from the subwoofer. I was on the point of sending it back when I found a post on an audio/video forum where the same fault was pinpointed as the Audyssey setup microphone incorrectly setting the front speakers as large instead of small. On checking my speaker config I found it had done the same, I made the changes to the speaker size and the sub burst into life - minor adjustment to the crossover settings and it's perfect, really great sound with deep bass and just what I wanted!
out of the box joy January 23, 2010 P. shepherd Very easy to set up. Excellent sound quality in my opinion for dvds, blu rays and ps3. Bass is very powerful and i regularly have to turn it to late night setting to avoid upsetting the neighbours.
Only down side is that i find the voices can be a bit quiet so i have to turn the volume up to compensate. Then when there is a loud action sequence, i have to turn the volume down. Bit annoying but i am going to buy a proper centre speaker.
In summary, outstanding value for the money, especially with hd audio and subwoofer. I would recommend getting a centre speaker or maybe buying the 5.1 add on speakers for better voice and true surround. I used some cabinet speakers for the front and used the smaller speakers as rear speakers and watching blu ray action films is a joy. You won't be disapointed if you buy this.
Excellent sound for the money January 6, 2010 Paul Roberts (Glasgow, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I couldn't face the hassle of discretely routing wires for a full surround system so I looked into this and and the various "sound bar" solutions. Went for this in the end and I'm very glad I did. As others have noted it does not deliver the same immersive experience as a *decent* 5.1 or 7.1 system, BUT if you're swithering between this and a bargain-basement full surround system then I'd say go for the Onkyo. It delivers very good quality audio for the price, and once you've taken the time to callibrate the system using the supplied microphone the pseudo-surround effect is pretty good. Set up is trivial, the speakers are light and easy to wall mount and you even get a 1m optical cable in the package. To sum up, it's a cheap and easy way to dramatically improve your home theatre with minimal hassle.
Excellent!! December 30, 2009 Rob (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this unit after reading all the positive reviews and have not been disappointed! I have Sky HD and Blu ray hooked up via hdmi and the xbox 360 connected via optical cable, everything sounds 1000 times better than through the tv's speakers, when watching movies I am frequently turning down the volume not to annoy the people in the upstairs flat!!
I did have the problem with the dreaded buzzing, but this is fixed by simply turning off the Dynamic EQ, which I found made the sound too bassy when turned on anyway.
Overall I am very happy with the purchase and would recommend it to all (except the neighbours!!)
