Arguably the best blockbuster of summer 2009, J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the Star Trek saga has made for pulsating big screen entertainment. And in retrospect, it was an amazing achievement. It opened up the franchise to those who would usually give it a wide berth. It weaved in plenty from the Trek universe to satiate fans. And it proved to be an exciting, effects-laden and action-packed extravaganza that left you positively salivating for the sequel. But its work wasn’t done when it left cinema screens. For when Star Trek arrived on Blu-ray, it instantly catapulted itself right near the top of reference-standard discs. With a stunning, gleaming picture that crackles with detail, and a house-rumbling surround sound track that matches the heftier moments with more subtle work, the disc is an all-round delight. Furthermore, it’s also jammed full of extras, and refreshingly, the majority of the supplements you get with Star Trek are also presented in high-definition. It’s a shame that has to be highlighted as an exception to the norm. Star Trek, nonetheless, offers a terrific example of how things should be done. For ultimately, Star Trek is not just one of the best and most exciting blockbuster films of the last few years, it’s also one of the very best Blu-ray discs to date. It’s an unmissable release, and add us to the list of those avidly awaiting the sequel. --Jon Foster

Star Trek - what a great movie. I am no trecky nor sci-fi fan, but this movie was really good. I watched the original Star Trek as a kid and thought that this prequel movie hit all the right marks and shows Captain J T Kirks relationship with Spock and how it all came about. Seeing the original Spock was also an added bonus and his wonderful point-um-up ears!
Good effects on the movie, great storyline and many good similarities between the orginal 70s-80s cast and the modern ones for the movie. Enjoyable and worth the watch.

I'm the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of the whole Star Trek franchise. But after strong recommendations I gave in and was pleasantly surprised. A really engrossing film with fantastic action and a gripping story. Glad I gave it a go, can't wait for the next one.

My wife bought this on Blu-ray a few weeks ago and I've now watched it three times, so felt it was ripe for a review.
As far as the film itself is concerned I really quite enjoyed it. I felt that the prequel idea was one that worked pretty well and it was interesting to see how the characters might have been in their formative Starfleet years. On the whole I think the film brought this off quite well, and some of the actors chosen to play the characters, most notably Zachary Quinto as Spock, really do look like they would have done many years before.
The story was for the most part convincing, although for me any tales involving time travel tend to get a bit confusing and require a large suspension of disbelief, hence the three viewings required to get my head around the machinations of the plot.
The most frustrating and annoying thing about the film for me, however, were the constant streaks and flashes of coloured light across the screen. At first I thought it might be a problem with the disc or even my Blu-ray player. Even though it's still new I updated the firmware on my player thinking that might solve the problem - it didn't. I checked loads of other Amazon reviews to see if anyone else suffered this problem - evidently not. My wife told me that a few of her friends on a Doctor Who forum had complained about this too but had not suggested an answer or solution.
Eventually I discovered what the problem was with a few well chosen Google searches - and there is no solution! These streaks and flashes of coloured light are apparently a phenomenon known as lens flare and, by all accounts, are put there deliberately by the film maker using a Knoll Lens Flare filter. Some people actually appear to think that this lens flare enhances the film. Well, sorry, but for me it is annoying in the extreme and completely detracts from my enjoyment of the film. I found someone posting on Twitter who had invented the Star Trek XI Lens Flare Drinking Game - I would have been comatose before the film was half way through if I played this game!
Without this I would have given a 4/5 rating, but the lens flare must reduce it to only 3/5.

on a whim,i decided to see this latest film in the Star Trek Universe.i'm sure glad i did.it's an origin story of sorts,a prequel(sort of)to the original Star Trek TV series,and obviously all previous films.some things in the mythology have been a bit tweaked,but that's why it works.it's not the old tired formula.there were some good Trek films in the past,a few excellent and a few not so good.but this one blows them all out of the water,in my opinion.not only is the story good,but the acting is stellar.there are also some very funny moments here.and the action is first rate.for me,this is easily the best Star Trek film yet.if you're a purist,you might not like it,which is understandable.if not though,you might really enjoy it.for me,it's an easy 5* rating

Novel? er no!... the film didn't make up for its history and expectation, I enjoyed it, and am glad I bought it, but it may be a long while before I watch it again.
