I tried this and found it to be what it claims, I know it is a fair price to pay, but it is really packed with lots of features that makes this worth the money spent, its easy to set up and does seem to be pretty user friendly.

Having been away from Office for Mac since 2004 (using iWork '09 Retail) getting this was a pleasant surprise. All my old work horses were there like but they had been rejuvenated and now look and feel a lot more like OS/X Applications. Office 2008 applications load quickly on my computer and support Windows file formats by defaults. Home and Student Office for Mac offers all the main features of the full package; the only major missing element is the Exchange e-mail sync.

The OS/X version of Outlook called Entourage is far superior to the combination of Apple Mail and iCal; though it was harder to sync items with my iPhone or with google's services. One outstanding feature out of Entourage is the Project centre which is great for planning events or holidays allowing you to group emails and todo lists into one place.

Spreadsheets: Excel is lightyears ahead of Apple Numbers. I am not a super huge spreadsheet user; the charting features are good in both but ultimately I found it easier to enter formulas and data into the worksheet in Excel.

Word Processing: If you are coming from MS Word on Windows you will likely prefer MS Word on the Mac; but if all you want is a quick nicely formatted letter or poster than Apple's Pages is likely better to generate something prettier.

Presentation wise; using Apple Keynote lets you get your Steve on (Jobs) whilst using Powerpoint keeps you more compatible with PC users. For students both are more than up to the task of helping you present in class.

A few years ago I switched over to Apple's iWork as at the time it was significantly cheaper than upgrading to latest version of Office. If you are switching from a PC to a Mac then Office will help you switch more easily; and Home and Student edition is excellent value for money. If you are a Windows user at work then office for Mac will guarantee the file compatibility and maintain the workflow you are used to.

Although there are worthwhile competing products, such as Apple's own iWork '09 or Sun's free OpenOffice, Microsoft's Office has pretty much held its ground as the ubiquitous productivity suite. The Mac version has (more or less) maintained compatibility with its Windows brother while trying to make itself at home on the Mac - this hasn't always been very successful and Microsoft were often guilty of arrogantly ignoring the Mac's inbuilt systems or paradigms and enforcing their own.

Thankfully with recent versions long-standing differences seem to have been resolved and Office 2008 feels very at home on the Mac. Even with its huge (arguably bloated) feature-set Office feels stable and responsive and Microsoft's Mac developers have had fun with the toy-box of user-interface effects Apple include in OSX.

When Office first appeared on the Mac only the full-price versions were available to normal users and the budget option was Education-only, so it's great to see Office now available at reasonable cost to all (non-commercial) Mac-users - as it has been on Windows for some time. It's especially good if you can make use of all three of the user licenses included in this pack - then you're getting a top-level productivity suite at a shareware price and that's hard to argue with (whatever you might feel about Microsoft).

Mac = fun, pretty, Radio 4 on in the background and all things nice.
PC and Windows = grey corporate suit, rainy Monday mornings and internal audit.

Office for Mac fuses the two together for those unavoidable times where you have, or want, to be working on a spreadsheet, Word doc or Powerpoint from home. This suite of software works perfectly for anyone interested in taking MS Office files home, working on them at home and subsequently using them again back at work. As far as I'm concerned, very much a means to an end rather than something to get excited about, but it has made my life a whole lot easier through instant and complete compatibility between my office drudgery and my nice shiny iMac at home.

A fine home-working tool, and recommended.

The thing with Microsoft is that they don't give you anything for nothing. They also have a seemingly growing aversion to Apple Mac. It's a surprise that they do actually do an Office product for the Mac. Having used the 2004 version, and it ran OK on my PowerPC Mac, I was looking forward to an upgraded version. Not least because I've been using the "ribbon" version at work. I would have expected them to try and carry some of the functionality over to the Mac, but they haven't.

I shouldn't also be surprised that the performance isn't really what I'd hope it would be (although nothing performs that well on a five year old Apple Mac, it's still better than a PC of that age though). There honestly isn't much difference between Office 2004 and Office 2008, or that's how it feels. If you're running an older version of a Mac (i.e. a PowerPC, then I'd suggest you stick with 2004 in terms of performance stakes).
