Rhetorical question: What's the only thing that can keep a potentially bad movie's head above water? Good actors, or course. Sure, the Dodgeball-esque scenes of Billy Bob Thornton viciously pegging second-graders with a basketball are chuckle-inducing (It appeals to the America's Funniest Home Videos lover in all of us), but the movie didn't quite live up to the promising plot. John Farley (Seann William Scott) plays a bestselling self-help author who was once a portly underachiever often bullied and terrorized by his militant (and potentially lawsuit-causing) gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Thornton). When he's invited to receive his Nebraska hometown's most coveted award, the corn cob key, he decides to pay his mother (Susan Sarandon) a visit. With horror, he discovers that she's planning on getting married to the sinister Mr. Woodcock. And, of course, the rest of the movie shows John's unraveling as he tries with all his might (and "corny" predictability) to stop that from happening. The movie provides some good laughs, but it's definitely on the B-list for the likes of these hilarious starring actors. --Jordan Thompson

4 out of 5 stars Great Comedy, I dont care what they say!   September 22, 2008
I thought this film was GREAT! I can't understand these other people who could only put it down. OF COURSE it was not meant to be real! It, like Bad Santa is good BECAUSE of its obvious EXAGERATION! All three main actors are GREAT, in fact EVERYTHING about this film is FUN FUN FUN!

2 out of 5 stars Strike Out   August 30, 2008
Mr. Woodcock had such great potential but failed to deliver. There are some real heavy hitters in the cast.

Billy Bob Thornton has the capacity to make any film a classic when directed properly. Although, he had his moments in this one.

Susan Sarandon was probably not right for the part...OR...was right for the part if the film was executed correctly. She is a gifted and elegant actress who can make a role striking and memorable. This role was beneath her to say the least.

Seann William Scott is a modern comedy genuis. He has the look, the resume and the chops to take a movie to the next level. He was also probably not right for this role. He belongs in Hollywood blockbusters, not forgettable films like Mr. Woodcock.

Three terrific actors combined into one film should have been a winner but just couldn't do it. Three strikes.

5 out of 5 stars I Laughed Very Hard   August 16, 2008
At first I couldn't watch this movie. The Mr. Woodcock character was too much of an a-hole for me to bear. But then I gave the movie a chance and watched through to the end. There are some great and ridiculously funny scenes that cracked me up real good.

2 out of 5 stars BAD SANTA IN THE OFF SEASON!... MILDY ENTERTAINING!   August 14, 2008

OK..this year's version of Billy Bob Thornton's "Bad Santa" persona is called 'Mr. Woodcock'! A couple of years ago it was 'School For Scoundrels', if you didn't like that film you probably won't like this film either. I found it to be mildly entertaining because Thornton plays this part so well! It's not a good movie, but if it's on cable, you might want to give it a look. It's a shame because they had a potential winner here and they blew it!...too bad :-(

3 out of 5 stars "Your mom's got a little bit of Woodcock in her!"   August 4, 2008

This movie was much funner than I thought it would be. "Mr. Woodcock" stars Billy Bob Thornton as a sadistic gym teacher who's engaged to a woman named Beverly (Susan Sarandon). As it so happens, Beverly is the mother of John (Seann William Scott), one of Mr. Woodcock's former students who's never quite recovered from his traumatic P.E. experiences. When John returns to his Nebraska hometown to visit his mother, he is horrified to discover that Mr. Woodcock is going to be his stepfather. Mr. Woodcock isn't a big fan of John's, either, and while he tries to be nice to the kid in front of his mother, he has no problem verbally abusing (and literally beating the crap out of) John whenever Beverly's not around.

There isn't much more to the plot than what I've already described, and yes, this movie is also very predictable. However, it also contains some brilliant stupid humor. Thornton as perfect as the Gym Teacher from Hell, and he has great on-screen chemistry with both Scott and Sarandon. If you're looking for a few cheap laughs, this is definitely the film for you.
