Product Description
Paramount We Were Soldiers (Blu-Ray)
Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace, the star and writer of "Braveheart," reunite for this action-packed war movie that features explosive battle sequences, thrilling aerial photography and unforgettable military heroes who fought for their country, their loved ones and their freedom. The year is 1965 and America is at war with North Vietnam. Commanding the air cavalry is Lt. Col. Hal Moore (Gibson), a born leader committed to his troops. His target: the la Drang Valley, called "The Valley of Death." As Moore prepares for one of the most violent battles in U.S. history, he delivers a stirring promise to his soldiers and their families: "I will leave no man behind...dead or alive. We will all come home together." This heroic true story of commitment, courage and sacrifice also stars Madeleine Stowe, Greg Kinnear, Sam Elliott, Chris Klein, Keri Russell and Barry Pepper. "We Were Soldiers" is "a must-see film for our time and all time!" (Bill Zwecker, FOX-TV).

Based on the book by Lt. Col. Harold Moore (ret.) and journalist Joseph Galloway, We Were Soldiers offers a dignified reminder that the Vietnam War yielded its own crop of American heroes. Departing from Hollywood's typically cynical treatment of the war, writer-director Randall Wallace focuses on the first engagement of American soldiers with the North Vietnamese enemy in November 1965. Moore (played with colorful nuance by Mel Gibson) and nearly 400 inexperienced troopers from the U.S. Air Cavalry were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese Army soldiers, and the film re-creates this brutal firefight with graphic authenticity, while telling the parallel story of grieving army wives back home. While UPI reporter Galloway (Barry Pepper) risks his life to chronicle the battle, Wallace offers a balanced (though somewhat fictionalized) perspective while eliciting laudable performances from an excellent cast. Like the best World War II dramas of the 1940s, We Were Soldiers pays tribute to brave men while avoiding the pitfalls of propaganda. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Great Film Demonstrating Enormous Resolve of Our Troops   October 7, 2008
This film is very intense, realistic and superbly shot. The production values are incredible. As a slice of life from the Vietnam era, the film captures the esprit de corps of the troops, the strength of the soldier's wives as well as the challenge of a new era in warfare. Mel Gibson is excellent. His sargeant, Sam Elliott, was a superb characterization of a tough sargeant who went through all three major parachute jumps in World War II. He is a no nonsense warrior.

All the more powerful is the portrayal of Gibson's faith in light of duty, courage and devotion to his men. Greg Kinnear did an excellent job as a challenged pilot creating a new Air-Cav warfare in the early days of Vietnam. His copilot "Too Tall" received the Congressional Medal of Honor decades ago. Kinnear's character finally received his CMH in the last year - long overdue.

Powerful. Memorable. Realistic.

5 out of 5 stars Horatio at the Bridge.   September 28, 2008
It is correct for us to honor free men who fought to keep others free. These are lessons that need to be taught to each generation. It is also correct for us to hear the counter argument. Heros can take that.

4 out of 5 stars The futility of war   September 20, 2008

This movie drives it home very strongly how futile and painful war is. Hundreds of men sent to their deaths for no good reason, maybe that would have been a better name for this movie, "For No Good Reason".
A very moving war story shown partly from both sides about the tragedy and suffering involved when 2 armies decide to take each other on, no holds barred, in a full frontal assault.
Mel Gibson is true to form, a powerful and strong epic from a master actor and producer, he has been involved in many great movies over the last 25 years, and deserves full credit for yet another commanding performance, despite a few fopar's off screen, he really is a legend of the modern movie era.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent War Movie   September 7, 2008
One of the finest, gripping and compelling war movie ever (also Tora Tora Tora, The Longest Day and Sands of Iwo Jima). Think what you want about Mel Gibson, however, this cast is remarkable and believable in the midst of the most incredible and horrific of battle. Note to chicks: unless you get the horror of war and the nature of the soldier, you probably won't like this film. I have seen it three times and I still am in awe of the suffering and heroism of those who served.
