Amazon.com essential recording Razor-sharp guitars, hip-hop and funk rhythms, and healthy doses of ska and dance-hall reggae make this one of the most surprising albums to come out of the American heartland. But what's most remarkable about 311's breakthrough release is its enlightened attitude: In an otherwise terminally aggro style of music, where everyone strives to be harder than each other, 311 put down deadly weaponry on "Guns (Are for Pussies)." "Hive," meanwhile, disses hard drug use (but they're pro-hemp, of course), and "Misdirected Hostility" encourages, of all things, positivity ("All that angst sh*t is just cheesy"). Vocalist Nick Hexum and rapper Doug "S.A." Martinez trade lines with ease, and the band dexterously shifts gears between heavy tracks like "Down" and "Brodels," the frantic "Jackolantern's Weather," and the laid-back "All Mixed Up" and "Sweet." The Bomb S**T!! February 10, 2008 B. Foley (K- town, MD) So this was the first 311 album i bought and it was the perfect introduction to what was to become my favorite band. I listened to this album from first song to last at least once a day for a straight month and it just left me hungry for more. So i went out and bought every album and each one means so much to me. Buy this one, buy them all.

"I got into 311 when I got their greatest hits" May 29, 2007 Untitled (nowhere) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Hey nerd, you aren't into 311. Just because you have a greatest htis dosen't mean your into the band. Stop kidding yourself, there's plenty of bands that have great albums, I didn't get into them. YOu have no concept on getting into things. Also, the reason why this is so much different from the singles is because 311 have different sounds from each of their albums, and you got snippets of their long career, seven different albums, different vibes and sound. You don't _____ about 311, and you say that you got into them. Hive wasn't even a single, and I even doubt fans give a ____ about their fan favorites anyway. Stop trying to look so smart (Im you! I spell my name fully just to make me look better than most but I really don't know _____). because you don't know half of the stuff you talk about. I may have grammar errors, but I just like to have my opinion down. br / br /With nerd out of the way, this is still their best. Yes, SOME of you "long term" 311 fans (the "I was there first" ____) might hate this one (I still don't understand how some 311 fans don't like this that much). If you think about it, 311's self titled dosen't have many aboslutly unique songs. Grassroots had tracks like Lose, and 8:16 A.M., and so on, you get the picture. Basically, 311's 311 is simply 311 showing simply the straightest, to the point of their rocking style with ultra sharp riffs over funky hip-hop rythems (thanks to chad's drumset, which arguably is his funkiest. He uses different kits for each album.).Throw in a dose of various Jamician esque flavors, and you got it. YOu could almost feel a 90's summer and the usual memories most kids in the 90's probally had, as well as today. br / br /Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of variety, but just compare it to Transistor, and you just might see what I am talking about. br / br /The greatest thing about this record is that it's a very great and varied mixed bag (yeah, say what?). I'll admit that Down has long lost it's spotlight, and it's been one of my least favorite songs by 311, I hardly even care about it unless I listen to it. The other singles though are excellent, with All Mixed Up's hip-hop reggae sound still great and Don't Stay Home with it's great ending, highlighted by a steel drum jam. There's only 2 reggae other rock songs, Purpose, and Sweet, just both great representations of the whole style. One of my personal favorites is Jack O' Lantern's Weather, with a ______ sweet ending, hip-hop guitars, jamaician chorus, and _________ sleigh bells! Hive and Brodels both kick out of your _________ speakers. And there's plenty more too! br / br /Despite that the record is short, none of the songs miss the mark, it's great the whole _________ way through. I can't stress this enough, stop comparing this to ________ artists like limp bizkit and papa roach, both bands are terrible, retarded, and they flat out ________ ______. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, by the way, aren't like 311. Both are great, but both are extremely different in many ways. Seriously, look at them both. br / br /10/10
More than a decade later, it still rocks heavy March 21, 2007 Fredrick Nielson James III (Ithaca, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got into 311 when I got their greatest hits, but when I got this, I didn't realize how different the album is from the singles (Down, All Mixed Up, Don't Stay Home, and the fan-favorite, Hive). Like other bands, the songs the band decide are good for radio aren't the same as the other tracks on the CD. More of the album is rapped than I was expecting (not complaining, though). The album has interesting pictures in the liner notes (pictures of planetary masses), although I'm not quite sure how they relate to everything else on the album. This album is solid all the way through, from the distortion-heavy Down, and closing with the rapped TP Combo, named from Tim Mahoney(lead guitar)and P-Nut(bass), who made the music. br / br /1. Down - 9/10 Really good song with some killer rapping from SA. br /2. Random - 8/10 Don't care for this one as much, and seems kind of oddly placed on the album. br /3. Jackolantern's Weather - 9.5/10 Stacatto verse riffing with screaming guitars. What's not to like? br /4. All Mixed Up - 9.5/10 311's(probably)biggest hit, and for good reason. Trust me on this one. br /5. Hive - 10/10 Nick Hexum and SA trading lyrics in a head-banging heavy-hitter. br /6. Guns (Are For Pussies) - 8/10 Good lyircs, but not too amazing. br /7. Misdirected Hostility - 8.5/10 Talking about how people need to lighten up, and "kick the f***ing heroin!" br /8. Purpose - 8.5/10 A very chill track for the most part with good lyrics. br /9. Loco - 9/10 A short song talking about taking shrooms. br /10. Brodels - 8/10 A slow and heavy song that's sub-par (for 311) br /11. Don't Stay Home - 10/10 I love this song. The song's about a guy in prison. br /12. Don't Let Me Down - 8.5/10 A fun and short song with a threat at the end "If you hurt him again, I'll f*** you up!" br /13. Sweet - 9/10 A reggae-toned song similar to Purpose. br /14. TP Combo - 9.5/10 A perfect closer to the album that ends abruptly. br / br /Overall, a great album you shouldn't miss. Key tracks: Don't Stay Home, All Mixed Up, Jackolantern's Weather, and Hive.
Classic 311 January 5, 2007 T. Nielson (Salt Lake City) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you enjoy classic 311 albums like "Grassroots" and "Music" you will probably enjoy this as well. Parts of the album have the feel of early rap/hip hop, but they are still tolerable to most adults. I think the reason for the $0.01 price I got is simply that this is one of 311s most mass-produced CDs out there and there are extra copies floating around. A great start to your 311 collection, and who would complain about a CD for 0.01 plus shipping?
