Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's IJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat/I completed the transition from cantata for schoolkids to big-budget glitzfest with Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival. Here's the 1992 Canadian version of that show, and even if it's not an ideal recording--Janet Metz as the narrator is no match for Laurie Beechman in the original Broadway cast and there's a little too much synthesizer in the orchestrations--this CD is valuable for the performance of former teen pop idol Donny Osmond as the title character. He's in excellent voice, and was so right for the role that he was selected to preserve it for the 2000 video production. And of course the songs are still here, showcasing Rice's witty lyrics and Lloyd Webber's chameleon tendencies--dabbling in country, calypso, French cafes, and a King-like pharaoh--as well as favorites "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Go Joseph." This production also includes the "Joseph Remix" (also known as the "Joseph Megamix"), a nine-minute medley of themes arranged with a heavy beat that was used for a kind of onstage aerobics routine as the show's postscript. The advertising was listed the cast of the movie version, while it actually contains only Donny Osmond from the movie everyone else is not from the movie version with Maria Friedman as it states on the website. Sent it back, since this copy was improperly advertised.

I actually got to see this cast perform live in Canada. While they made changes in production when adapting for the movie, the basic feeling of the play remains. It is just like watching it live. I highly recommend this if you enjoyed any of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber's other plays: Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis., etc.

I purchased this cd to give to my child along with the dvd "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Overcoat." This cd is a recording of the Canadian cast which produced Joseph in 1992. It is not the audio recording of the dvd production starring Maria Friedman, Sir Richard Attenborough and Donny Osmond as advertised. br /Donny Osmond shows the amazing vocal skill and talent he possesses as a performer in this audio production. The production is well done, however the only criticism I have is that I do not care for Janet Metz as the Narrator. Her voice is to high and does not blend well with Osmond's. br /I would like to see the dvd movie version of the "Joseph" soundtrack released on cd. With the vocal talents, musical arrangements and full orchestra it would be a cd well worth purchasing.

I also have been searching for the ORIGINAL Joseph for years. Scepter Records number SPS 588X. I have the vinyl album right in front of me - and no way to play it or record it to disc. It is too scratched and old. Doesn't anyone out there have a decent recording of this? Why is it not on CD? I have also heard all the other versions out there...and none can compare to the original recording by the Joseph Consortium.
