With its cinematic mix of dramatic brass fanfares, crowd noise, chorus, twangy guitar, and mandolins, "The Lonely Bull" was as much a novelty as an instrumental hit, but it served as an ideal launching pad for Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. During the 1960s, they created some of the most popular instrumental music of all time, blending catchy tunes, Mexican dance rhythms, and a lively brassiness. "Spanish Flea" and "Tijuana Taxi" may best define the style, but Alpert possessed keen insight into the tradition of lighthearted danceable music, touching on swing in "Getting Sentimental over You," and doo-wop in Leiber and Stoller's "Love Potion No. 9." The movie themes "Never on Sunday" and "Zorba the Greek" tie the music even more strongly to the '60s, while expanding the group's inclusion of ethnic themes and sunny climes. It's the lightheartedness that ties this material together as much as the trumpets and trombones. Even "A Taste of Honey," a tune given moody treatment by everyone else who recorded it--from the Beatles to jazz saxophonist Eddie Harris--becomes irresistibly cheerful. The playing time of the CD is brief--little more than a half-hour--but it contains all hits, no filler. i--Adam Rains/i

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Flea   October 13, 2000

Spanish Flea is the feel-good song of the millennium. We dance to it at work when we meet deadline or just when we need a little pick-me-up to get us through the night. If I had to pick a song to play at my wedding, it would be Spanish Flea by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

5 out of 5 stars A classic for any 60s instrumental fan   September 30, 2000

I play Whipped Cream and What Now My Love albums all the time, but this album covers all the bases. It is a classic and if you are a beginners Herb Alpert fan this is strongly encouraging to get. It starts off at The Lonely Bull, and then shakes off to Spanish Flea (my favorite).

4 out of 5 stars Good, but too short....   August 24, 2000

This compilation was released in 1970 and was a greatest hits package confined to Herb Albert TJB's first four or five records, so it's sadly lacking a couple of their biggest hits, namely Casino Royale and This Guy's In Love. It could also be argued that a couple of more tracks from Whipped Cream could have been added, such as Bittersweet Samba.pBuy this one at a discount, only... I am glad that the CD repackaging of this retained the original colorful and cheezy cover. The graphic artists used so many different colors in the title that it almost makes your eyes hurt to look at, especially if you look at the LP version. ...and oh, and make sure you own a copy of Whipped Cream, it needs to be in everybody's CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling Stuff From South of the Border   June 12, 2000

For one of the other reviewers to call this souless is pretty ludicrous. The music is not in the heavy style of an Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding but its more a mellow spunky South of the Border Style such as Carlos Santana. Herb's Trumpet Playing is a just a joy to listen to and the twelve hits compiled on this record are quite representative of his style. The backing musicians add alot of special elements whether it be with maracas, guitars, xylophones, or other not everyday instruments. Also, this record adds a great deal of light hearted fun. And whats wrong with a little fun in one's music collection. So go out and dance the tango or merengue to some of these spunky numbers. Or just lsiten to Herb and his cronies play some good music.

5 out of 5 stars An All-Time Great Album   June 7, 2000

This, in my opinion, is one of the best albums ever recorded. The music, the beat, the arrangements, the execution - all are superb. There is a palpable sense of fun and musical passion here. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss elevated instrumentals to a height never before reached and that has never been matched since. If you listen in to the arrangements, the background instruments et al, you hear something new every time you listen. What is difficult is naming these particular songs as Best Of The Brass since you can buy any TB album and hear numbers equally toe-tapping and infectious. You just have to feel UP listening to the BRASS. Trust me on this one! You'll love 'em.
