Just in time for Valentine's Day (or your anniversary or any other time Cupid's arrow strikes), Rykodisc offers up a fanciful dose of classic romantic film themes from the deep coffers of United Artists Pictures. IReel Love/I exists in a quixotic vacuum, harking back to the days when a lilting string quartet or a graceful horn line signaled the blossoming of a beautiful onscreen relationship. There's no "Music to Sign Pre-Nups By" here, no "Theme for an Unplanned Pregnancy"--just the pure, idyllic fairy-tale stuff from some of Hollywood's top-shelf sultans of swoon--Henry Mancini, Andre Previn, Alex North, et al. Better for you than a box of chocolates, less prickly than a dozen roses, IReel Love/I is the next best thing to making out at the drive-in--and, hey, no mosquitoes either. I--Matt Hanks/I

4 out of 5 stars Sweet as syrup...   January 31, 2005

Anyone wanting a nice set of not your typical syrupy sweeping film music will love this album. I don't know how many of these films would be on your top 10 list but the beautifully orchestrated scores deserve to be preserved. The time range is from 1961-1972. There is not a whole lot that is memorable here but thats'what makes this compilation so attractive. You can play this during some special moment with a loved one as background and it will not distract you from your intentions. br /To the collector these excerpts are rare and all but "Live for Life" and "What are you doing for the rest of your life" if not for this disc would have fallen into obscurity. All originate from the original sound tracks so the remastered sound is variable, but totally acceptable!

4 out of 5 stars NICE COLLECTION   April 12, 2000

Well, the front cover bites, but this is a well-mastered and sequenced compilation of some fine film stuff from the 50s and 60s. UA released some great scores back then, but I do regret that no one saw fit to include THE APARTMENT by Adolph Deutsch, which UA/Ryko owns now but will not release. Nevertheless, you get Lai's great Live for Life theme here, along with some funky 60s Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, and some great oh-honey-hand-me-the-scotch-and-valium music from Michel Legrand for The Happy Ending, which has been sadly out of print for about 25 years. Thanks Ryko, now get back to work.
