If you're looking for something out of the ordinary for the season, IThe Lost Christmas Eve/I is for you. This final entry in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's rock opera trilogy is perhaps their most ambitious and complex in the series. Like its predecessors, IThe Lost Christmas Eve/I tells the story of heaven's youngest angel called back to earth to continue Jesus' unfinished work. This time he lands in New York City to help redeem not only Christmas, but the soul of humankind itself with a story line that rivals anything Frank Capra ever dreamt up for the big screen. Conceived and composed by Aerosmith and Savatage producer Paul O'Neill, most of the song were penned O'Neill, Robert Kinkle, and Savatage founder and keyboardist Jon Oliva, and features the rest of the seminal Florida metal band on the record. While not as bombastic as Savatage's fourteen rock epics which touch on topics as diverse as the Russian Revolution, the 15th century explorer Ferdinand Magellan's descendants, and Beethoven's last night, the record still has a grandiose, almost over-arching baroque feel, with its prog-rock organ swells and electronic alchemy. The best moments are during the soaring instrumentals, on tracks like the "Wisdom of Snow," "Wish Litz," "Christmas Bells, Carousels Time," and the majestic rendering of "O Come All Ye Faithful." I--Jaan Uhelszki/I

4 out of 5 stars Reading by the light...   October 29, 2008
D. COLLIER (Brownwood, TX United States)
I like Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Their first CD (CHRISTMAS EVE AND OTHER STORIES) is easily one of my top ten favorite Christmas albums. (Maybe even top five.) Two years ago, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing them in a sold-out concert performance in Houston. And I hope they continue to make great Christmas music in the future, although I've heard that LOST CHRISTMAS EVE will be their final venture into the Christmas music arena. br / br /LOST CHRISTMAS EVE will not disappoint anyone who loves hard rock instrumental. It will, in fact, disappoint only a few Christmas music enthusiasts who enjoy a wide variety of Christmas music; and anyone who does is probably already a TSO fan to some degree. LCE has some true power-house songs such as "Christmas Jam," "Wish Liszt," "Back to a Reason, Part II," and "What Child is This?" which contains the phrase which inspires the title (Reading by the light of a lost Christmas Eve). br / br /This CD is loaded with fun and delight. The only things that it really lacks is a taste of the familiar (that is, more familiar renditions of carols) as well as a few more songs to slow things down a bit. It has a few mellow ones but it could use a few more. br / br /Overall, I'd say it's a lot better than the second CD, but not nearly as good as the first. And I don't mind saying, I hope there will be a fourth. (I would love to see a TSO treatment of "Little Drummer Boy" and several others.)

4 out of 5 stars All good stuff for Christmas, but a bit samey   October 3, 2008
R. Whiteman (Staffordshire, England)
The Trans Siberian Orchestra have become a Christmas Tradition themselves, providing a welcome alternative to the typical seasonal diet of organ music, choirs and crooners. br /Their latest offering is typical of their mix of skilful guitar, blues and classical music. br /This mix has been tried by other bands but none have delivered the panache and sheer musicianship of TSO. br /However, the lost Christmas Eve has not innovated enough and the formula is feeling a little worn out. Some tracks are even taken from previous albums. br /It is still worth buying and if you have never listened to the Trans Siberian Orchestra, I suggest you do. br /And on Christmas Day, put this album on the stereo in the background. It'll drive the grandparents nuts.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone ... but it should be!   April 5, 2008

The music on this CD is superb. I will now buy the trilogy of which this is the third CD. It is very good rock!!! br / br /The band played on and on, br /With no one looking at their watch, br /And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, br /They would turn it up a notch.
