Album Description On the heels of the recent Droppin' Science compilation, and to the delight of crate-diggers everywhere, come these treasures from deep in the Blue Note vaults. The artists featured here created soulful, and funkified sounds that decades later became the source of grooves, vamps, and beats for today's most heralded DJs and hip-hop producers, from Jay-Z to Beastie Boys to The Roots...On Fancy Dancer, Flutist Bobbi Humphrey was a Duke-and-Dizzy approved, straight-ahead player when she inked with Blue Note in 1971 during the label's crushed velvet groove era. This is her final Blue Note album. Complete is her soul jazz-transformation via the fly, white-gloved production of the Mizell Brothers.

A Formula That Works October 25, 2006 John L. Hughes, Jr. (Nashville, TN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Mizell brothers (Larry and Fonce) have their formula down pat. Take mellow, superfly-like grooves, add cheesy arp string ensemble riffs, passive male background vocals that make the Blackbyrds sound like the O'Jays, and a lead horn or woodwind instrument. The end result is music that could easily fit into any 1970's blaxploitation flick. These brothers have applied their production formula on bestselling jazz-fusion albums by trumpeter Donald Byrd, saxophonist Gary Bartz and of course flute player Bobbi Humphrey. br / br /FANCY DANCER is the third Bobbi Humphrey album produced by the Mizells and her last recorded during her classic Blue Note period. Her playing is pleasant, but as ususal, the backing grooves take center stage. If you're a fan of mellow 70's soul-jazz, this release does not disappoint.
