Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
For many years Andre Popp was best known for cowriting "Love Is Blue." But that claim to fame (if you can call it that) was only the tip of the iceberg for this most unclassifiable of composers. Popp was a sonic explorer who has been said to be France's answer to Juan Esquivel; but while both men did share a humor-filled vision of music, Popp was even more experimental in his manipulation of sounds. He could take as a starting point a tune by, say, Charles Trenet, record various parts at various speeds, interject sound effects (look for the sneeze), and it would still be a brilliantly accessible song--albeit one that would reveal its complexity only upon close listening. Long out of print, this 1957 recording remains a marvel of witty ingenuity. i--Elisabeth Vincentelli/i

4 out of 5 stars THE WAY I REMEMBERED IT   July 7, 2008

My father bought the 33 1/3 LP of Delirium in Hi-Fi in the early 1960s, and that record entertained my younger sisters and me for hours, whenever we could persuade him to play it. By the time I finished high school in 1969, I never thought I'd hear these pieces again, but one day recently I googled it anyway. I wasn't sure at first whether it was the same album - the LP had a different cover (reproduced in the CD insert), and the LP said it was by Elsa Popping and her Pixieland Band. I don't remember it being credited to Andre Popp on the LP. But they're the same, as the insert explains, and it is just the way I remember it. In fact, while it has been nearly 40 years since I've heard it, I could recall and anticipate every nuance. Memory is such a remarkable phenomenon!

4 out of 5 stars It's delirious.   July 13, 2005

This is a very strange album. It features a lot of imaginative sonic "experiments". Such as instruments recorded at half speed or double speed, and then played back at normal speed. Also vocals or instruments recorded backwards and then played forwards. It's all way ahead of it's time, and it should be of interest to anyone who likes unusual music.

The contents of this disc will let you revel in the joys of your own insane music taste over and over again as you listen to the delirious confections of this little collection. And you'll split your gut when you hear the gnignis sdrawkcab (backwards singing) segment, or my name isn't itraM.
