Afro-Desia along with Quiet Village and the Exoticas are wonderful favorites taking me back to childhood when I listened to Martin Denny all day long. I was so influenced by MD at that time I even wallpapered my room with bamboo.

A sinfully salacious package, with the Randy Van Horne singers giving Martin Denny's orchestrations an extra kick(weren't they once the Hanna-Barbera singers?). "Afro-Desia" will take you to new, forbidden places, one where the sounds are aphrodisiacs and the grooves are so convincing you may start worrying you forgot your passport at the hotel. Absolutely enchanting, and arguably Denny's best outing.

5 out of 5 stars PURE FANTASY.THE WILDEST MARTIN DENNY EVER!   November 13, 2000

This album could be called Afro-Desia,the exotic sounds of The Randy Van Horne Singers, because they are what make this work stand out among other Denny releases. The Choral arrangements on this album are excellent. They're even wilder than the Randy Van Horne parts for Esquivel! The Denny boys are in top form, playing the usual extensive array of instruments from every corner of the globe.Augie Colon's birdcalling is better than ever. And Martin Denny is there providing the waterfall-like piano that holds the arrangements together. This is a really wild album, one that I can comfortably label as exotica at its absolute best. It's what one would IMAGINE primitive music to be,although far from it.This album really paints a picture.Standout selections are Ma'Chumba,Cubano Chant,Swamp Fire(perhaps the best Denny song ever)and the frenzied percussion of Siboney. The others are ALL excellent as well.I highly recommend this one and consider it essential exotica.
