The Underground Jazz Society, a group made up of some of smooth Jazz's finest session and live players, have created a work featuring their collective fascination with the possibilities inherent in the piano as a jazz instrument. Hinging on tight, strong melodic themes as opposed to traditional jazz loose improvisation, this is the very essence of smooth jazz. The genre has been described as "typically played on a downbeat, with melody emphasized over imrovisation". If one takes this as the very definition of smooth jazz, then this has to be the penultimate achievement in the piano sub-genre of that field. "Cool Breeze" sounds like it's title - a short, sophisticated melody line played on a keyboard by someone with exceptional skill and backed by a tight, highly compressed percussion section. If one takes the negative connotations from the word "stereotype", the Underground Jazz Society creates just that. Catchy yet sophisticated, with simple melodies grounded in complex song structure, this album is a must have for any piano enthusiast looking for an introduction to smooth jazz.
