Whether you consider plants a source of terror or not will ultimately determine how you feel about the grisly horror movie The Ruins, but director Carter Smith and his cast and crew certainly give their all in bringing the chills of Scott Smith's novel to the big screen. Jena Malone (Saved) and Shawn Ashmore (the X-Men franchise) are the name actors in a pair of American couples down Mexico way who are ambushed by hostile Mayans and forced to the top of an ancient temple, where a monstrous and diabolically clever entity awaits them. Director Smith and his talented crew (which includes cinematographer Darius Khondji of Se7en fame and composer Graeme Revell) create a visually impressive spookshow but can't quite deliver genuine suspense (gore, however, is handled capably), and Scott Smith's script boils away much of the character development and mounting terror in his book, which also strands the likeable cast. The movie's monster, so alarming and imaginative in the original novel, is likely to provoke as many laughs as screams from filmgoers, especially when it reveals its unique talent. -- Paul Gaita

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!   September 5, 2008
I usually don't have the time or energy to write a review...but in this case, it is necessary. It takes a lot for me to HATE a movie. There almost always something that makes it ok...not in this movie. I want my hour and a half back. Trust me, everyone who gave it one star nailed it! Only one other movie ticked me off this bad: Hope Floats. The book is probably good. I enjoy books with this type of plot... the movie however tanks. It ruined my night. (pun intended)Avoid!

2 out of 5 stars Never really got under my skin ...   August 29, 2008
Well it was at least a cool idea...ancient Mayan ruins are a great pretext/setting for a movie, and the story had potential. Unfortunately the decent build-up thruout the movie fizzled out once you find the vegetation is pretty much the gist of the horror. I wonder who decided to give the flower buds the ability to mimic speech? That was a sorta neato thing, but the fact that they only cried out certain phrases and the vines only moved at certain 'high drama' parts of the movie, made the whole fiasco feel like something a juvenile would have scripted! The actors made the whole thing mildly watcheable in spite of the goofiness, but there's no denying so much more could have been done within the fascinating lore of the Mayan world

1 out of 5 stars YES, this movie is in RUINS.   August 27, 2008

I've not read the book this film was based on. Despite that, I still find this movie delivers no suspense nor thrilling. There are a couple of scary scenes. For example, it's the scene where one of the girls cut off the flesh from her leg to get rid of the plants that had eaten it way into her body. The acting is below par. I do not feel sympathetic for the characters. The worse thing is the special effects. The devilish plants look fake.

It's a typical bad B movie. I am glad my friend rented it for us.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time and Money   August 25, 2008

I have long accepted the fact that horror movies will almost never receive the best film award. But we still keep watching them because there is a certain entertainment value. We like the suspense, the horror, the shock and the surprises. This movie has none of it. The acting is bad. The story is bad. The "monster" is laughable (can anyone say Little Shop of Horrors?). The entire feeling of the movie is as if someone was under a two hour deadline to come up with and write a story. It was very entry level. Sorry, if I could give it less than one star I would.
