| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com This 60-minute documentary gives a decent, thought-out overview of the history and practice of qigong (pronounced "chee-gung"), the ancient Chinese energy exercise. Director and translator Garri Garripoli spent two years traveling through China and Tibet, interviewing spry old masters who credit their excellent health--and ability to heal others--to regular qigong workouts. More of a philosophy than an exercise, qigong has been an integral part of China's culture for more that 5,000 years. Dramatic footage shows Taoist fire jugglers and the legendary Shaolin monks performing amazing physical feats thanks to their ability to manipulate their qi, or life force. These scenes illustrate the long-respected relationship between the healing arts and skills in battle. But the emphasis throughout the presentation is on qigong as a medical art, useful in killing pain, lowering stress, and boosting immunity. Interviews show qigong healers treating the sick, often using their exercises in conjunction with Western medicine. We're also shown scientific research carried on from the time of the Cultural Revolution (when most of China's internal arts were forced underground), including electro-acoustic measurements of qi as it's emitted from the hands of qigong healers. If you've been taking classes in tai chi, qigong, or kung fu and want to know more about the underpinnings of the art, or if you're just interested in Chinese culture or energy medicine, then you'll be fascinated by this tape; if you're looking for a how-to guide for a qigong workout, look elsewhere. --Grant Balfour
Description Qigong (pronounced "chee-gung") is a 5,000-year-old Chinese healthcare modality that has both endured the test of time and is making a tremendous resurgence at the threshold of the 21st Century. Literally millions practice Qigong in China and around the world each day to successfully treat diseases ranging from hypertension to cancer. The purpose of this documentary is to provide a unique, historical look into the world where the elder Masters of this medical artform dwell. Viewers will be taken, for the first time, on a journey deep into China to visit the monasteries, temples, schools, and homes of these practitioners. Meet the 92-year-old female bonesetting Master Luo and the spry 90-year-old Wushu Master Duan Zhi Liang, seeing them perform and teach their exercise and healing techniques. Qigong - Ancient Chinese Healing for the 21st Century is narrated by actor James Shigeta, star of "Flower Drum Song" and Disney's "Mulan." It is produced and directed by Garri Garripoli, author of Qigong - Essence of the Healing Dance, Emmy award winning graphics and special effects designer and Qigong practitioner for 20 years. Garripoli spent two years living and filming in China to ensure a sensitive treatment of the subject. His personal approach has helped to make Qigong accessible to the average viewer. Extensive shooting was done all across China in Beijing, Datong, Luoyang, the Shaolin Temple, Xian, Chengdu, Tibet and Shanghai, providing viewers with the richness of China's natural landscape. "Filming this documentary solo has become a life-changing experience that has awakened me to the potential of human healing," says Garripoli. As we journey into the countryside and into crowded city streets, it is evident that Qigong has become a necessity as well as a way of life in China. For a growing number of students, medical doctors and healthcare practitioners beyond the Great Wall, Qigong is an exciting cultural gift which may hold the answer to better healthcare in the next century.
