Now a Spirit Detective the young man must track down demons and humans alike who desire to rule over the three realms of reality.Contains episodes 1-28.System Requirements:Running Time: 600 minutesFormat: DVD Genre: ANIMATION/ANIME UPC: 704400059933 Manufacturer No: 0

Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi, the hero of the fantasy-adventure Yu Yu Hakusho, brags about being the toughest kid in Sarayashki Junior High: He lives to fight, especially with his rival Kuwabara. When Yusuke's killed saving a little boy from a speeding car, he's given another chance by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the Spirit World. If Yusuke properly nurtures a "spirit egg," it will hatch into a benevolent beast that can help him return to his body permanently; too much negative energy will produce a monster that will devour him. Yusuke temporarily wins his life back with some help from Kayko (or Keiko), the girl he secretly loves, and Botan, the pretty pilot of the River Styx. Koenma makes him a "spirit detective," assigned to tracking down evil spirits prowling the human world. Yusuke's evolution from selfish thug to good guy includes some false steps, but he defeats his first foes with a mixture of daring, imagination, luck--and kindness. He wins over Kuwabara and the demons Kurama and Hiei, and undergoes special training from super-psychic Genkai. Yusuke and his allies battle the four "Saint Beasts," demons associated with the Chinese directional animals, and rescue a Snow Maiden imprisoned by a corrupt capitalist. These episodes conclude with the opening of the Dark Tournament, a sort of supernatural WWF tag-team smackdown that will take up most of the next two seasons. This popular comedy-adventure plays like a cross between Dragon Ball Z and a minor Frank Capra movie. (Rated TV PG: risqué humor, cartoon violence, violence against women, alcohol and tobacco use.) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars a qaulity anime   September 26, 2008
yu yu hakusho offers only the best in anime and well worth the price.i own the old box sets myself but for anyone never seeing this series,i strongly recommond it to anyone thats a fan of anime in general.it has everything.fighting, romance, comedy, drama,as well as an excellent voice cast.the spirit detective saga, also called season one,is one of my favorite saga of any show and the storyline is some of the best.very good character devopement troughout so you get to feel for the characters as the show goes along.the series itself slows down alot after the dark tournement, also an excellent saga, but other than that its awesome.highly reccommond it!

4 out of 5 stars Yu Yu Hakusho rocks   August 28, 2008
I'm so glad I bought this box set. Yu Yu Hakusho is one of my favorite fighting anime ever. I got hooked watching it on Cartoon Network as a kid and have never regretted watching it. ^_^ This particular boxset is awesome. It has 2 slimcases with 4 discs total for 28 episodes. Compared to other anime which put ~4 eps to a disc you get to watch twice as much before having to make the switch. ^_^

Plus the price can't be beat. I got my set for $21 and will be getting the second season for $19 since I preordered it. I've never seen anime so cheap! But its still great quality. I will be ordering the entire series from Amazon because no one else can beat these prices.

4 out of 5 stars A very entertaining long running series.   August 25, 2008

Yusuke Urameshi is a typical teen with problems. He could care less about school and his peers. Teachers hate his guts, mom is a drunk. And he loves to fight. One day he's suddenly hit by a car and killed instantly. Since he was killed trying to save a life. He's given a second chance but he must fight as a spirit detective to protect the earth from evil demons and even humans.

Yu Yu Hakusho is an action comedy that is very easy to like for those who enjoy non thought driven titles. The characters are very likable and the story is easy to follow. The reason I like the characters so much is simple. They're classic anti heroes, street punks and criminals looking for a fight. They won't hesitate to beat an enemy to death. Plus the main character would rather enjoy his three day weekend then save the world.

The battles are the strongest point and they are a treat to watch. At times they are just brutal but they are imaginative. And some have a few clever endings.

Even though this is mostly an action title. The episodes are well written and the stories keep getting interesting. The villians introduced for the most part aren't a waste. Some of them are the very definiton of cruel. They also have some interesting abilities.

The animation is good but I really like the character designs. Especially concerning some of the villians. The demons have a unique look to them. The soundtrack is very good during the battles and I also like the ending theme.

This season set contains episodes 1-28 on four disk. I'll also point out the track listing isn't correct. For example disk one is listed as having the first seven episodes. Instead it has eight. It's the same for disk three, it contains the very next episode on disk four. The season ends on the "First Fight" episode of The Dark Tournament saga. This isn't really a problem but I feel it should be noted for those who are very quick to see the next DVD.

Overall Yu Yu is a very good series but its targeted for a different audience. If you love Bleach, Naruto, Ranma 1/2, or DBZ. Then this series is definitly for you. Those looking for something thought driven shouldn't even waste their time.

5 out of 5 stars awesome   August 16, 2008
Well worth the price
has all the episodes up to the first match of the dark tournament
plus its only 2 disc so its not a big pain to have to put a new disc in maybe every 4 episodes like other season box sets
