Product Description
Without doubt the Eagles are one of the all-time biggest acts in popular music since the dawn of the rock'n'roll era. The band's roots go back to their role as defining artists in the phenomenally popular Southern California rock scene of the '70s a decade in which they delivered four consecutive #1 albums. Their momentous 2004 farewell tour filled stadiums around the world and this 2-DVD set captures one of the most stellar events from that now-historic global sweep.Track Listings:Long RunNew Kid in TownWasted TimePeaceful Easy FeelingI Can't Tell You WhyOne of These NightsOne Day At A Time (New Track)Lyin' EyesBoys of SummerIn The CityAlready GoneTequila SunriseLove Will Keep Us AliveNo More Cloudy Days (New Track)Hole In the WorldTake It To the LimitYou Belong to the CityWalk AwaySunset GrillLife's Been GoodDirty LaundryFunk #49Heartache TonightLife in the Fast LaneHotel CaliforniaRocky Mountain WayAll She Wants To Do Is DanceTake It EasyDesperadoFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS UPC: 603497216727 Manufacturer No: 972167-2

Thirty songs, spread out over two discs and well over two and a half hours, with fine performances, great sound, and good visual direction: it's all here on Farewell 1 Tour, a documentary of the Eagles' 2004 concert in Melbourne, Australia. At one point, the veteran band seemed unlikely to even make it to the new millennium, but here they are, mostly intact, with a string of hits dating back more than three decades. The majority of them are performed here, from the earliest ("Take It Easy," "Desperado," "Peaceful Easy Feeling") through "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane" and right up to "Love Will Keep Us Alive" (from Hell Freezes Over, their most recent recording with new material on it); there are also hits from Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Joe Walsh's solo careers, and a few new songs as well, including Walsh's "One Day at a Time" (an earnest ode to his new-found sobriety) and "Hole in the World," Frey and Henley's moving, almost gospel-tinged reaction to the events of 9/11/01. Guitarist Don Felder, who split acrimoniously with the band in 2001, isn't much missed, as replacement Steuart Smith plays the parts just as Felder did--i.e., pretty much exactly as they were recorded (indeed, pristine recreations of the studio versions of their songs has always been a hallmark of the Eagles' live shows). As for the somewhat cheeky title, well, there's always been a certain smugness to the Eagles' sense of humor, and it's no different this time, as Frey doesn't even pretend that there won't be a Farewell 2 Tour in the future. And why not? These are good songs, played beautifully by the quartet (plus supplemental musicians) to audiences that love them. Bonus material is limited to perfunctory interviews with the band. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Concert!   August 23, 2008
The overall video quality for this HD-DVD is quite good. There are a few spots that are a little soft but they don't detract from the experience. The 5.1 soundtrack is also impressive. The performance is pretty much flawless. The Eagles are rich in vocal ability and it shows. All 4 of the main-stays, Henley, Frey, Walsh, and Schmidt are bonifide lead singers in their own right. Together, they are very impressive. Their instrumental abilities also do not disappoint. Walsh is an accomplished guitar player. Schmidt is an excellent bass player, very under-rated. Henley is a very able and steady drummer. Frey is a good rhythm guitar player. Henley frequently switches to guitar, but seems to use it as a prop as much as acually playing it. Frey switches to keyboards and though not fancy, does a fine job. With their supporting cast of talented players, it hardly matters anyway. Bottom line, they switch because they feel like it, not because thay have to. Sadly, many famous groups/bands really can't sing or play very well at all. The Eagles are the real deal. Unfortunately, the music business is just that, a business. Too often, talent takes a back seat to market-a-bility. I always enjoy hearing The Eagles many group and individual hits again. Great songs are always great. I also own their "Hell Freezes Over" DVD, which is also quite good. But this one looks better, sounds better, and has more songs. A+ in every way. Highly Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Dud- twice   August 18, 2008
Disappointing. Beware-- "Farewell Tour" hd dvd ordered from Amazon was defective. Would not load. Returned for replacement and the second one did the same thing. Credit/return was easy, though. Bought the regular DVD locally-- and it is AWESOME as we knew it would be.

5 out of 5 stars Not much of an Eagles fan until this!   August 7, 2008
I have maybe two Eagles LP's in my collection. "One of these nights" and "Hotel California" are probably the only two songs I liked; that was until I saw the video for "Funk#49" and I recalled that Joe Walsh had joined the band back in the late 80's or early 90's but I had not paid attention. Well this changed my whole outlook. The songs are tight and in some cases sound better than the recordings. The back up musicians are great! Scott Crago on drums is outstanding! He looks like he's having a lot of fun keeping time and IMHO plays better than Don Henley. Joe Walsh keeps you laughing throughout the show with his antics and his playing is awesome. The other guys ain't too shabby either. One track in particularly has caught everyone's attention; "One day at a time" which Joe wrote and deals with his problems with alcohol which many of us can relate to. Just that song along is worth the price of admission. I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!   July 12, 2008
I've had the chance now to watch the DVD twice and I am just so impressed that after all these years, the Eagles are able to put on such an amazing show. You would think that at this point they might just mail it in, but they give an absolutely electric performance. Don Henley is just amazing. His voice is stellar, although his rendition of "Hotel California" seemed just slightly off. Maybe if they had put it earlier in the concert instead of at the end, his voice would have been more fresh. But he hits everything else just right. Glenn Frey is great too. He's sort of the emcee and has a few funny jokes, such as dedicating "Lyin Eyes" to his ex wife, Plaintiff. (Get it?) Although he looks kind of silly dancing while Henley sings "All She Wants to Do is Dance." He and Joe Walsh also seem a bit off during the closing credits in an interview they taped. Walsh seems kind of out of it and Frey can't stop his giggles. I also gained new appreciation for Timothy B. Schmit. People rag on him all the time that he's not a "real" Eagle and not as good as Randy Meisner, but I think he definitely holds his own. "Love Will Keep Us Alive" is such a beautiful song. And no Don Felder - who cares! If you like the Eagles, you will LOVE this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Just GREAT!   July 5, 2008
I liked the Eagles before I watched this and now I love them. These guys are total professionals who are polished and understand what it takes to entertain an audience.. There is not one negative comment that I can make except the type should be larger for old farts like me.
