Unwanted pregnancy might sound like a risky subject for slapstick comedy, but Knocked Up is from writer-director Judd Apatow--so we are in the hands of a man who likes to push things. And like Apatow's predecessor, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up is a shaggy crowd-pleaser, a comedy strewn with vulgarity but with a sweet heart at its center. A one-night stand between the utterly mismatched Ben (Seth Rogen, his first starring role) and Alison (Katherine Heigl) results in said pregnancy, and the two people reunite for mutual support--even though they barely know each other. Ben's a slob who lives with four other guys, all of whom share the same stunted approach to maturity; Alison is a new on-air personality at the E! channel. That these two eventually develop a shared understanding and affection is perhaps the movie's biggest stretch (some of the male-humor jokes amongst the guys are idiotic enough to test anybody's hope of civilizing them).

Rogen and Heigl don't really jump off the screen, but, to be fair, the movie frequently needs them to play straight while the supporting cast cuts up. Virgin vets Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd are around to supply some humor, as Alison's sister and brother-in-law, and the four idiots who live with Ben (Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Jason Siegel, and Martin Starr) are in their own zone of sophomoric bad taste. Still, by 40-Year-Old Virgin standards, this movie doesn't explode, and it sometimes feels ramshackle to the point of not being thought out. Apatow's indulgence of actors creates some fine moments (Paul Rudd seems to have most of them), but it can also make a movie feel flabby, and this one is overlong by the length of a belly. --Robert Horton

Description
The writer and director of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" delivers another a hilarious hit comedy that's bursting at the seams with never-before-seen-footage! They say that opposites attract. Well, for slacker Ben (Seth Rogen) and career girl Alison (Katherine Heigl), that's certainly the case - at least for one intoxicated evening. Two months and several pregnancy tests later, Ben and Alison go through a hysterically funny, anxious and awkward courtship that leads to huge laughs in the biggest comedy of the year!

3 out of 5 stars Average movie with some funny moments   August 19, 2008

This movie was not quite as good as 40-Year Old Virgin, in my eyes, because of too many attempts at slapstick humor. Apatow's films could do with more subtle and clever humor.

However, I do think that this is a good flick to see if you're looking for some goofy humor and have some time on your hands.

Knocked Up is the kind of comedy that's almost pointless. The characters talk, and yet you don't care about anything they say. They try to be funny, and you never laugh. You try to get some kind of interesting story out of what's taking place, and even though you can do it, you wonder if you wasted your time even bothering. That's what Knocked Up is all about.

i read the negative reviews and despite my cynicism (sp?) i say remember. this is a MOVIE about an idealized situation that film viewers might find entertaining and endearing. like , you know, a happy ending? real life doesn't work like this but who cares. i found the movie funny and oddly touching. stoner goof gets lucky and shows his true mettle to a hot, deep chick, who sees his true worth. pure fantasy but wow. IT'S A GODDAMN MOVIE YOU SAPS.

i thought it was great

5 out of 5 stars Laughed my butt off   August 2, 2008

I saw this movie again a couple of days ago. Laughed my butt off. Stupid funny, but also kind of charming and realistic in some ways. For all those negative reviewer, relax, don't expect an oscar winning movie about the meaning of life and creation...you'll find you self laughing and actually relating to the characters.

3 out of 5 stars "Debbie is a freak of nature!!"   July 29, 2008

A solid funny comedy full of sex, lust, jokes and "plenty" of nudity.

Ben is your typical "loser" who meets Alison in a bar. They hook up at her place, have sex and without a condom, enjoy themselves.

She had her job, her looks and other things going for her when she found out that Ben didn't use a condom when she specifically asked him to.

Right before the act, Ben takes the almost-on condom off because there was a misinterpretation between the two, aka a broken message. She gets pregnant and emotional once she finds out.

The characters are funny and many, attractive. The dialogue wasn't too shabby but they swear a lot. Especially the use of the "F-word".

But if it's a comedy you're after that's kinda tacky, sex-wise, then by all means. It's funny, it's somewhat realistic (for once) and the characters are half way decent.

I actually felt something for them.

3.75 stars.
