5 out of 5 stars Great live album   May 23, 2008
MEDIOCRE SOUND QUALITY

Released in 1971, this is Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks second album. It is the first on MCA records and the first to get wide distribution. It is 39 minutes long.

The bad news is that the MCA CD releases have poor sound quality. The sound is muffled, slightly fuzzy and does not have the dynamic range of the original vinyl LP. However, this is the best sounding of the MCA releases, being better than either Striking it Rich or Last Train to Hicksville.

This is a live album played before a small audience. The good news is that the audience noise is almost nonexistant and does not interrupt the music. At times it is hard to tell that this is a live album. There is some chit chat between songs.

This is just a great collection of acoustic songs. If you are reading this, you probably know all about Dan Hicks and his music, so I won't explain it. I will just talk about it in context of his other albums.

I think this has a strong collection of songs, but they are not as strong as Striking It Rich. However, the sound quality is better and the live setting gives it a nicer feel. I like "The Most of Dan Hicks" better, because it has near perfect sound quality.

Some interesting notes: David LaFlamme of It's a Beautiful Day was in the Hot Licks at one time. The main violinist in the Hot Licks, Sid Page played on one of the It's A Beautiful Day albums.

Dan Hick's first album was called "Original Songs". One of the songs from that album, Shorty Falls In Love is on this album. A couple more songs are on Striking it Rich. The Most of Dan Hicks contains 9 of the 11 songs from Original Songs, plus a number of unreleased songs, many of which will be redone on later albums.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic   February 13, 2008
This is a must-have for anybody who likes Western Swing, good country, rockabilly, and blue grass. The music is excellent, and although a live recording, the sound quality is good. The first song and "Where's the Money" are wonderful. Do yourself a favor and add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars If Dan plays near you, don't miss the show   February 8, 2008
I saw Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks this summer, and was mighty impressed. The band is a wonderful collection of skilled musicians and the ladies can truly belt out the vocals. The band is playing music, but also they are toying with each other, and the audience. Check Dan's tour schedule and catch him if you get the chance. Dan has a stage presence and rapport with the audience that needs to be experienced. And if you are a die hard fan and yell loud enough, the band just might play a cut from this CD or one of his many others.

"Where's the Money?" is a very early release from Dan and the Licks, but it was all there even back then. This CD precedes "Striking It Rich" and of the elements that have made the Licks legendary are all in here. It can only be described as an eclectic mix of jazz, country and vocals. A complete joy, for fans and for the uninitiated.

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks never dissappoint!

5 out of 5 stars You MUST have this one   May 12, 2007
If you like Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, you MUST have this recording.
By far his best of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Great performance   January 3, 2007
From the 70's Dan hicks has been a great performer in pop, blues, funk, rockabilly, and country genres of music. Multi-talented, this band can do it all and sound great today as they did in the past. Great selections of tracks.
