| Synopsis:
In the heart of the beautiful and historically rich Dordogne Valley of France, a team of archaeology students and their professor diligently work to uncover the ruins of a 14th-century castle. For Professor Edward Johnston (Billy Connolly), the project is the culmination of a lifelong dream. Aided by assistant professor Andre Marek (Gerard Butler), his son Chris (Paul Walker) and students Kate (Frances O'Connor), Stern (Ethan Embry) and Fran?ois (Rossif Sutherland), Johnston has made major strides in unearthing not only La Roque Castle but also a monastery and structures from the surrounding village of Castlegard. But things are about to go haywire. Suspicious of the dig's benefactor, International Technology Corporation (ITC) and the man who runs it, Robert Doniger (David Thewlis). Professor Johnston heads to ITC headquarters in New Mexico to get some answers, and while he's away, his students discover a chamber that has been sealed for more than 600 years. Marek and Kate descend into the unstable room, and just before a near disastrous cave-in, they make two startling discoveries, a bifocal lens, which couldn't have been invented before the chamber was sealed, and even more intriguing, a handwritten plea for help dated April 2, 1357, from Professor Johnston! Determined to solve the mystery, the students head for ITC headquarters, where they are stunned to learn of Doniger's new invention a machine that can actually transmit three-dimensional objects through space. Although he meant for the device to revolutionize shipping, Doniger inadvertently opened a wormhole that leads directly to the 14th century, and Professor Johnston, who had insisted on experiencing the discovery himself, is now trapped in a vicious feudal war between France and England! |

TIMELINE October 22, 2008 Yvette Frazier TIMELINE IS ORIGINAL AND VERY ENTERTAINING. GERARD BUTLER AS WELL AS THE WHOLE REST OF THE CAST IS GREAT. br / br /VERY INTERESTING SUBJECT MATTER. IT'S A SCIENCE-FANTASY AND QUITE ENJOYABLE. br / br /I'LL PROBABLY WATCH THIS ONE AT LEAST FOUR TIMES A YEAR!!
Cool castle siege, that's all October 12, 2008 tuberacer (Honolulu, Hi.) There's some cool scenes of a nighttime siege on a castle with flaming projectiles flying back and forth and some interesting glimpses of Medieval warfare--some really well-done historical recreation in that department--but the rest of the movie is just plain silly, and some of the acting is pretty bad, and a lot of the acting is really bad, and obviously the director is pretty sad if he just let slide so much bad. Probably a movie for teenage boys. I probably would have liked it when I was a teenager and lacked an age-earned discriminating eye. For teenage girls? Well, that's for a woman to say. There's a cute, although preposterous, romance mixed in. Medievalists might like owning a copy for the recreations. My copy's going to the used bookstore if they'll give me a buck for it.
They sure messed up the book badly August 12, 2008 R. Bagula (Lakeside, Ca United States) It is still a good sci fi time travel movie, br /even if they parched the novel badly. br /The devil is in the details and they left out br /so many that a lot is lost. br /This novel with the archaeology was one of Chichton's best. br /He actually seemed to care about his characters and subject material. br /The lead character of the archaeologist who could use a long bow and a sword br /is truncated to a bit lover story without the background br /of the interaction between Lady Clair and him. br /Changing history and the greed of the company back in br /real time are sort of glossed over... br /I like the movie anyway, by halves. br /
A Nice Little Tale of Twisted Fates August 11, 2008 Julie C. Gilbert (NJ United States) I will admit to never reading the book, so I can't say if it was better or worse. I'd guess worse, since the book usually is better:-) However, I will say that I found the movie entertaining despite the improbability of the science actually working. A lot of the movie was spent in rousing "run!" scenes, but the ending, though predictable, was oddly "happy." br / br /The fight scenes were decently done, and who doesn't love watching people run around with buckets on their head and smashing into each other? Swords galore and Greek fire, lovely stuff that, made for some mindless entertainment. Go grab it from the library if you're too cheap to buy the dvd, though you'd probably enjoy it if you like sci-fi/ fantasy movies.
Why can't they stick to the book?? August 7, 2008 J.H. (Stockton Springs, Maine) If they had stuck to the book this movie could have really been something. I loved the book and absolutely hated this movie. It was cheese-factor 10!!!! They screwed it up royally!
