Room EQ Wizard
Room EQ Wizard is a Java application for measuring room responses and correcting
modal resonances. It includes tools for generating test signals; measuring SPL; measuring
frequency and impulse responses; generating spectral decay plots, waterfalls and energy-time curves;
generating real time analyzer (RTA) plots; calculating reverberation times;
displaying equaliser responses and automatically adjusting the settings of parametric equalisers to counter
the effects of room modes.
Key Features
- Free!
- Support for the Behringer Feedback Destroyer Pro models DSP1124P and FBQ2496, including
filter setup via Midi (Midi interface required). For a great resource on using
the DSP1124P with a sub, check out the BFD Guide.
- Support for the TMREQ equaliser in the TAG McLaren AV32R DP and AV192R AV
processors, including filter setup via RS232
- Signal Generator offers sine waves, square waves, linear and logarithmic sine
sweeps, random pink noise (full range, speaker calibration, sub calibration and custom
filtered) and periodic pink and white noise
- Compensation for C-weighting when using an external SPL meter as the input,
calibration files can be loaded for microphones or SPL meters
- Existing measurement results can be imported from ETF 5, text files or WAV files
- Frequency response measured using logarithmically swept sine signals for
fast, accurate measurements with approx 0.36Hz resolution across the measured range or
via real time analyzer with up to 1/48th octave resolution.
- Impulse response is derived from the measurement, allowing
spectral decay plots, waterfalls and energy-time curves to be generated. Impulse
responses can be exported to and imported from WAV files with 16, 24 or 32-bit resolution.
- Reverberation times derived in accordance with ISO 3382 in octave or one-third octave bands
with results for Early Decay time (EDT), T20, T30 and an optimal fit RT60 figure.
- Automatic identification of peaks in the response, automatic assignment of filters
to peaks and optimisation of filter parameters to counter the peaks
- Filter settings and sets of measured data can be saved to and restored from files. The
filters' impulse response can be exported as a WAV file for use with a convolver plug-in, such
as http://convolver.sourceforge.net/
- Comprehensive help files within the application and on-line
- REW requires V5.0 or later of Sun's Java Runtime Environment,
available from
http://www.java.com or
http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html
for Windows and Linux platforms. Update 10 or later is highly recommended
- On Mac OS X platforms it may be necessary to download Java 2 SE V5.0 to get
the V5.0 JRE. At the time of writing Release 6 was the latest available, but check
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
for the latest J2SE release. Release 6 can be downloaded at
www.apple.com/support/downloads/javaformacosx104release6.html.
It may also be necessary to change the default Java
application JRE version from 1.4.2 to 5.0
To change the default JRE version:
- Open the Java Preferences application in
/Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/
- In the "Java Application Runtime Settings" panel, drag J2SE
5.0 to the top of the list (above J2SE 1.4.2)
- Click Save
- REW has been written and tested under Windows XP, most
features should work correctly on other platforms that support Sun's Java
Runtime Environment, except for RS232 serial communications (only used to
communicate with TAG McLaren Audio AV32R DP and AV192R AV Procesors)
which only function on Windows platforms. It has also been tested under
Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.4 & 10.5 (OS X 10.5 Leopard recommended).
- Midi communication (used to set filters on Behringer BFD Pro DSP1124P
and FBQ2496 equalisers) is supported on Windows platforms. Linux platforms
will require Tritonus to support
Midi comms. Mac OS X platforms with J2SE V5.0 installed should support
Midi but don't, use
Plumstone.
- Minimum screen resolution: 800 x 600, 1024 x 768 or greater recommended
- Minimum RAM: 256MB, 1GB or more recommended

Appreciation
20th May 2005: The good folks over at the
TAG McLaren Audio Owners' Forum
got together and organised a superb plaque to show their appreciation of the Room EQ Wizard, and on top of that chipped in to fund the purchase of a measurement microphone and preamp to help me continue the development. Heartfelt thanks to everyone involved, especially to Graham who made a really fantastic job of the plaque.
